Mazda is the only Japanese brand to have consistence decent looking cars. Other makers are hit & miss (mostly the latter) in styling.

 

I think could be the Ford influence. I have done project that is joint Ford/Mazda. Some of the platform are shared too, like the Fiesta & Mazda 2.
