Kids will be kids they will be unhappy looking at other kids around them

Can see who's the materalistic one here. The lonely kid with all the latest gadgets will be unhappy when he/she see a big happy family of siblings. Playing with each other, sharing with each other, helping out each other when one's in trouble, etc. More human interaction.

The single kid with the latest gadget such as iPad, PSP, etc will not know what is human interaction. In a world of his own where everything is about me, me and me only.

Can see what's wrong with the society nowadays and in the future.

Neutral Newbie

another "feel good" report like the 8 bucks heart surgery and 1K HDB buyer.

end of the day, they can "report" or "argue" till cow come home and people here still struggling day and night and birth rate is still low.

i will not be surprised if there will be another report in the future stating 1.8K single got own car, drive everyday and go holiday "once a while".

what Singapore needs most is this kind of family, earning 1.8K got 6 kids. not the educated group that earn 6K or above and still dont want to have kid.

Anybody can try to survive on a low salary But At what cost and quality of life

Pray that non of their children are autistic or dyslexia

Otherwise financially can be .......

Yes, but sometimes to make a kid understand is not easy. There are too much why............

This report on family with 6 kids with only father working at $1.8k p/month probably have hidden agenda. The gahmen want the pple to have more kids and showcase low salary is not major issue to improve the TFR rate.

With Spore huge pool of reserves, there a still a lot can be done to improve birth rate. Waived maid levy, further subsidies child and preschool education, COE rebate for family with kids and increase paternal leave just to name a few.

There is still so much room to improve.... [rolleyes]

1800 for a family of 8 ... life is more tough than good

why would you and your children live in a tough life?

even with govt subsidy, life is still tough without all the fancy nice to have stuff

to raise national fertility rate is critical

however, this example is inappropriate more like a person live 'beyond' his means

...Even with tuition loans, they still need to pay, it is not FOC. ...

If I recall correctly, the tuition fee loan for uni, given by some banks, cover the fees. Of course still have to pay extra for books, etc. But I think the official fees are all covered. Of course, after graduation and start to work, have to pay back by saving some salary each month.

I took the loan for 2 years, then sponsorship for remaining 2 years - so this is what I recall... takes about 1 year working to pay off 1 year loan at a comfortable pace/amount.

to you, it may be tough, miserable and depressing

but to them, they are content and they don't mind the hardships as they can withstand it

some people can withstand hardship and turmoil times while some weaker ones can't..

My greatest worry is that both father and mother are not aware of the exponentially increasing financial burden down the road or they just choose to ignore it, just live 1 day at a time. I am very curious, would the MSM run a story about this family, say 5 years down the road, and see how are the 8 coping?

Is people money so should go back to the people.

If not 'Lao Li' will threaten us increase birth rate if not import more foreign thrashes.

I think he should import more foreigners to turn the tide against him

You are right. Normally, those who have never gone thru turmoil times cannot take hardship.

Agreed as long as they are contented with life. Life is not about big house, fancy car or latest iPhone.

That's the main problem.... We sporean think, compare & expect too much..

I'm 1 of them last time but luckily realized these early enough to switch my mindset and lifestyle.

Seriously, now i'm poorer but definitely much happy n healthy.

Last time when young i stay with my grandma, she can support her 6 kids alone despite being a frozen food hawker with meagre income and the best part all of us stay in a 1 room flat.

I guess nowadays parents have much higher expectations from life and they inevitably pass down these traits to their children and results in the current prevalent material driven mindset for everything, i.e money is the key to everything, be it happiness, health, fun, joy, love or whatever tangible/intangible states people chase at.

The point is, the $1800 family have high chance to weather any storm if from young their parents already inculcate the right correct moral values and expectations to them, per their parents standard. Lastly, as some forumers pointed out, the joy of living thru thick n thin with your loved ones are stuff that $$$ can't by and usually serve as a strong motivation to excel as life moves on.

Raising 6 kids is tough, thats for sure, but I think in Singapore, our mindset have to drilled that happiness means have to be rich. Good for kids means to throw a lot of money on enrichment course, all the toys, gadgets & oversea tour every 6 months or so.

Many of the people I met that is not Singaporean have the same opinion of us. That we are rich, seeing how we keep throwing money around, with expensive stuff, expensive trips, all the gadgetry, do not think twice about spending near to 6 or 6 figures on renovation. People having maids when their kids are already over 12 years old.

Of course like that cannot have money for more than a couple of kids for many people.

There is nothing wrong to wear clothes pass down by others ( I had mainly clothes passed down), it doesn't take long to prepare a healthy small meal for 4-6 person, you can lighten workload at home, by getting kids above 12 to take responsibility, to take care of siblings & do some house work. Their own room is a good start. 12 years old is old enough to be able to make simple meal like sandwich & cook rice. In some other countries, kids started to learn basic cooking & baking at around this age. Toys can be shared.

Responsibility & ethnics are the best enrichment course for the kids. Get them involve in washing car, water the plants, learn about fixing stuff. Let them know they use your car, live in your house they have responsibility to maintenance as well.

[thumbsup][thumbsup] doable !
