SINGAPORE: Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said he has noticed more unsafe driving on Singapore roads. Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Shanmugam commented on his experience on the roads on Monday.

He cited two incidents, where drivers almost caused accidents because they did not indicate before switching lanes.

Mr Shanmugam also cited one incident where his wife, who was driving, indicated to switch lanes but a van deliberately moved much faster to prevent them from pulling into the lane.

The post also garnered dozens of comments within minutes on the Channel NewsAsia Facebook page. Some have suggested deploying more Traffic Police officers on the roads, to tackle bad drivers.

I generally agree.

But there are a fair share of motherfarkers, whom after I give way to them to cut in front of me after they signal, start hogging the road and it usually pisses me off real bad that I have to cut in front of them again from the left to continue on my journey at my original pace.

And let me emphasize that their actions piss me off because it's on lane 1 of expressways.

It's an acquired art to change lanes in Singapore. That's what I'll tell him.

Might as well tell us that COE prices are increasing and that the MRT trains are getting more crowded....

i think its an issue of courtesy. maybe life is too fast paced here or everyone is always just in a rush. when i was living in the states, i would say 95% of the time if you signalled, the car next to you would pull back. or if a police car / ambulance was coming through, people would be courteous to always make way for said vehicles, even at their own inconvenience (not the case here)

ive had people also speed up to avoid me changing lanes. sadly for them, all it takes is for me to drop 2 gears and i can slot in perfectly. i dont normally like to do that, but people here have a nasty habit of filling the gaps as soon as they signal .. i've actually been driving on the extremely left lane for about a week now, and aside from the heavy vehicles, its actually quite a pleasurable drive (since most of the crazies want you to yield lane 1 sometimes .. heh)

I always go out of my way to make way for the ambulance behind me, even if it means squeezing other cars out of the way on the lane next to me.

As for driving on lane 3, yes it's the new "lane 1" now. But don't you feel the pain when the small little stones hit your windscreen and bonnet at 80kph? Piak = pain [laugh]

Bingo... so much so that I don't feel like giving way nowadays. And those that actually manage to cut in, got skills and the sense to keep up with the traffic flow in front and most of the time I don't even need to brake for them. I got no issues with this group of drivers because I'm one of them [laugh]
