Treating meal in a tactful manner

zhoon bo? where? and the owners allow that? I mean it would make the diners so uncomfy who would dare come back again?

I witnessed it when I dined there. Those scavengers were well behaved towards diners, no begging or jostling. Just

hang around the peripherals, ever watchful, ever ready to make their move.

Most of them were young.....looked like betwn 10-16, with a few adults among them. All were wearing big oversized

coats.

At first I thought they were about to clear the table next to mine. Then they started stuffing food in their mouths, sucking at discarded

bones, emptying soup, gravy into mouths, stuffing pockets, even grabbing from each other the remnant bones.

It happened so fast, next moment, they rushed over to another vacated table. It seem they had their MO down to a pat!

They really cleared the table! I mean, in a way.

Oh ya....it was either in Hangzhou or Suzhuo city area, in a sheltered food street where there're nice and clean stalls offering

local food and delights. Fixed tables and seating provided in an orderly manner. Most of diners were non locals; we chattered

with a group from Sichuan.

The way u described the food part, similar to those mynahs hanging ard hawker centres. I observe them from a distance and thatz what they do.

Anyway, kudos to TS.

Yesterday, I sat down with my set lunch at TP Hub Burger King. While retrieving some stuff from bag, I noticed two old ladies, one who is in a wheelchair at the next table. Suddenly, the one not in wheelchair stood up and slowly made her way to the next table occupied by an Indian guy as he was leaving. I noticed she took a cup of unfinished ice-cream from the guy's tray, put it on her table and proceeded to clear his tray.

She made her way back to her table and started eating the ice-cream without bating her eyelids. I was momentarily [shocked]. After I regained my composure, I approached her to give her my lunch. To preserve her pride, I told her all I wanted was actually a cup of hot tea but it came in a set meal. I asked if she could help me finish my burger and french fries. She kept asking if I am sure, I reassured her and told her that I would be grateful if she could help me. I went back to my table and have my drink.

Then a PRC lady came up to her and gave away her burger saying that she had gotten the wrong item too. I sat down, have my tea and started to ponder. For those who have bought lunch for poor folk that you encountered, have you come across someone with such strong character? If yes, how did you handle it? I wondered if there is a better and graceful manner to treat them to a meal.

i think wat you have done was most tactful [thumbsup]

Quite an apt description. It's just that to witness human doing it really touched the recess of one's heart.

There are "green" folks in US who hang around supermarkets during closing time, and when supermarket staff throw out expired, near expired food stuff, these folks would scavenge them. Not to waste .. and be green. These folks are mainly educated pple, from a green club, cant bear to see food go to waste, so willing to scavenge for food when they can afford.

Another scenarion, a fren of mine. Not poor, decent 30s guy, ok looking, with a steady job as a IT trainer.

Lunched with me at a restaurant, and during our meal, the next table left. A plate of fruit was on the table, a few slices left, he proceeded to scavenge the fruit right in front of us. I tot he was a weirdo, din dare to ask him why he did tat. :(

QPIK, that was quick thinking on your part.

In a fast food joint, another way of helping needy folks is to place an order for them and asking the counter staff to deliver to their table while you can remain anonymous. The outlet manager should know what to do because they often recognize these poor "regulars" who are there to use the toilet or just to enjoy the cool air.

u must understand that sometimes, these folks might be poor but they still have pride. we must learn to have a care for their dignity.

Yes, it would be nice of those MCF members who frequent that place to get the contact/address of the old folks,

so that meals could be delivered to them.

Usually there's a distribution centre in void decks of each HDB area, able-bodied needy ones would collect from there.

(not just for the old ones.....I'd met young and middle aged locals and FTs....anyone who requested would be given...no

questions asked or background checks done).

For those unable to leave their homes to collect, packed food would be individually sent up.

Shan You Counselling Centre has been providing social services to low-income families, needy elderly and disadvantaged community to enhance their physical, emotional, social and spiritual lives.

With the strong support and dedication from our volunteers and the kind and generous donors, enable us to bring our direct and indirect services and programmes to the community. Through establishing strong partnerships with other voluntary welfare organisations and family service centres, and government agencies like community hospitals, nursing homes and Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) also help to enhance the effectiveness of our programmes and services.

I volunteer for the ration delivery, but the ration is really basic items like rice, crackers biscuits milk powder for those with infants, though they have the ration, I was wondering does the CDCs also arrange for the utilities to be waived or subsidised. Perhaps we can refer those that need to the right groups as they most probably do not have the knowledge to seek help, if they do they would not be in such state.

We kept complaining (I am guilty of complaining too) that the government are not doing enough to help this group of pple left behind by society. I think we can contribute a little time just to help them, to show that our society do care.

Delivery of ration is only once a month. There are other method to contribute too. Like donation etc.

Perhaps those ladies may have received some form of help.

But perhaps the temptation of fast foods and dessert cannot be resisted.

Well done TS!

i encountered someone like that during the course of my work .. during biz lunch .. i also thought he was a bit crazy until someone else told me when the guy was growing up he was very poor .. sometimes cant even eat ... then now cant bear to see food get wasted (thought i think the person telling me was hinting to me it might be a psychological problem already ...)

Not every poor person knows where or how to get help (what is termed fallen through the cracks). We shouldn't just assume that the social welfare network will be there to help them, or they know where to find help from.

Those poor/destitute but still with quiet dignity earn my respect and empathy more than those that those that intentionally make themselves pitiful and play up their misfortune. Years back the newspapers did run articles on "professional" beggar who make quite a lot of money pulling on people's heartstrings near places of worship and such.

For a country with the world's highest per capita GDP, I hope the organizations that can help this people can do more to go out there and find them. Personally though, I rather give money or kind direct to someone who needs it, than to do it "conveniently" through calling a hotline during some TV charity fundraising event.
