CNA reported : Some 1,800 arrested for drink-driving in H1

Posted: 15 August 2012 1820 hrs

SINGAPORE: The number of people arrested for drink-driving in the first six months of this year has gone up.

Some 1,800 drivers were arrested compared to about 1,700 arrested in the same period last year.

In its latest clampdown on drink-driving early Wednesday morning, the Traffic Police arrested 19 motorists.

The 17 male and two female drivers who failed the breathalyser test were between 23 and 69 years old.

The three-hour anti-drink-driving operation was conducted at locations such as Balestier Road, Clemenceau Avenue, Sims Avenue and Outram Road.

Motorists convicted of drink-driving will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.

They will lose their driving licence and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licence again.

In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.

Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.

They may also receive up to six strokes of the cane if they should cause serious injury or death.

Look like the Law or Charges against Drink Driving are not deterent enough to prevent many from driving after drinking session...

Instead of incidents going down with so many spot checkes by TP, it actually went up in 1st half of the year.

Do away with the 1 year suspension of driving licence, make it 3 years ... [sly] ..

This might deter them.... [rifle]

should ban from driving for good , period!

mobile phone users should get same punishment

3 yrs ban will be a good lesson learnt.

If caught driving under suspension, then 20 yrs.... [sly]

and if the driver keep driving under suspension, include the jail term .

Driving ban/suspension are quite pointless without 24/7 enforcement. They still have the ability to drive as long as they get their hands on a car which can belong to someone else. The best is lockup for a year or two. Show no mercy. [:p]

i tell u some ppl just don learn.

i know someone who drink and drive. banned for a year.

During his no license days, he still drives but only in the day as he is in sales, he cant do without a car.

After he reinstated his licence, he drink driving again, banned for 3 years i think.

during his no licence days, he still drives in the day as usual. One night, he went drinking! and was caught at a police stop...

Went to 1 years jail, banned from driving, not sure how long. Released from jail 4 years ago and now he is still in sales, i think he is still driving without licence .

never contacted him for ages, heard from friend. but he was quite proud of his jail term though. met him 2 years ago and he did mentioned it himself...

I do drive to drink. I prefer the convenience and comfort of driving my own car. But after drinking I will get those car valet services to drive me and my car back. quite worth it in my opinion. Its just slightly more then taking cab to and fro. some more if your friends stay around your place can send them back also.

Turbocharged

how about if caught, confiscate the car + driving ban + fine?

And if caught driving without license, confiscate that car also even if it doesn't belong to him?
