I am still on Gingerbread. No thanks to Samsung's shitty ICS kernels really. Apparently if you do either a factory reset or do a restore under Clockworkmod, your phone will be hard bricked. Not even a USB JTAG can save your S2. [shakehead]

Some users already reported been bricked while trying out the new 4.0.4 builds (for S2). Thats enough for me to wait out. I am aware that AOSP kernels are spared from this deadly eMMC bug but currently i still don't find CM9 kernels to be stable enough for everyday use.

I just got a brand new S2 from SingTel.

It comes preloaded with ICS 4.0.3.

Then I rooted it.

I'm happy with it, doesn't have much problem for me..or maybe I couldn't find one. [laugh]

i think i may be pushing my phone a little too hard. So i cannot live with those problems i wrote earlier. It will compromise its ability to serve as a reliable phone 24/7.

I swear by dataflex for screen protectors. Only bad thing is you have to go to J Cube, AMK, or wait for their store at an IT show to get one.

For branded cases I go to istore.com.sg or this car at Funan's ground floor. For generic cases, I walk all over toa payoh then pick one I like.

For ebay, I usually look for a high ranking feedback and order from HK based stores as they're pretty quick.

I got my dataflex screen protector for my OneX at billington square.. cost $15 or $20 per piece.. have always been using dataflex brc always buy from the same shop always... Just curious, why is dataflex better than other cheap brands? It's a genuine question..

I also got dataflex protector for iPad.. I would say its good as my son didn't managed to tear it off like how he did to previous cheapo screen protector. Cost $40.. is it expensive?

I need a reliable phone too.

So the only thing I do is to root it and get rid of useless apps that carriers like to put in.

Why do they think it's so clever of them to include nonsense apps which many do not use, taking up precious memory space and can't be deleted until you root it ?

If I really need those useless apps, I can always download it.

Ya the high res anti-glare one is about $5 more exp. I'm using the clear which costs $10, GF is using the high res at $15. If you're buying a generic protector, price is about the same. Not sure about the ipad protector price. I got mine with the case, and haven't changed it since.

Optical clarity on mine is damn good, about the same as Martin Fields. But what i really like about dataflex is that they are like the SGP's Steinheil series. They attract fingerprints less [laugh] Also they're pretty hard to scratch compared to the generic ones. One thing I first noticed on my GF's Xperia Ray is that it made the screen a lot more responsive compared to the generic screen protector she had on before.

My cousin also likes their privacy protector. It doesn't turn blur (and give you a headache) as you turn the phone away. It turns darker till it just looks black (they have a white version).

if let's say i run go launcher on the nexus, can I customise the bar? or have to load another rom?

you have to do more than just changing the launcher. essentially you are going to have to tweak the framework-res apk which normally mod or ROM cooks do by processing via ROM kitchens. All you have to do on your part, is to find compatible CWM zip and flash them. The compatibility portion stems from the need to flash CWM zip files which were designed for your specific build and framework-res apk.

Well i certainly don't mean that i am the only one on earth who needs a reliable phone [laugh] . The thing is, i cannot explain why some users (among people i know) can have the same phone without rooting and without dumping the stock ROM, use the phone without any significant problems. I know there are plenty of people who experience a ton of problems but then i feel the problem lies with usage patterns. I have not attained the level where i am able to write a proper kernel for a phone yet but i understand the situation. That is, kernel developers (which i respect more than ROM developers) find a hell lot of redundancy coding/bloat in the kernel source code (the Samsung one) Essentially, they claim that the source code is really a big copy and paste from Google's AOSP with no great changes done. That shouldn't be the case. AS far as phones are concerned, phones are small handheld computers and each model differ significantly from another because the hardware configuration itself is vastly different. And therefore, the source code for each phone should greatly reflect that. It isn't the case.

I think i can answer the question why phone manufacturers go to great lengths to seemingly inflict untold agony on phone users by bundling proprietary GUI and bloatware which cannot be removed easily. I understand that about a Quarter ago, Nokia mentioned that it actually mull over a Android future. The Finnish giant was once optimised in terms of manufacturing output to produce 40% of the world's handphones. Now it faces the trouble of having to scale down, quickly. And Nokia said, i eventually rejected the idea of Android and its reasoning is, it cannot find sufficient means to differentiate itself from other handphone makers in the Android market segment.

That makes sense to me. You could have a few companies making colas but you want to make yourself stand out from the crowd! So why do Motorola, Samsung and HTC for instance try their best to keep churning out phones equipped with the Motorblur, Touchwhiz and Sense experience respectively? Answer; so they can distinguish themselves. Never mind that it is a disastrous job in the making. :D

By the way, you do speed up the phone by removing bloatware and free up "some" space meant for the installers com.xx.xx bla bla. However they also reside in the space reserved for ROM and normally 500MB of space on your internal memory is allocated for that. That space, you cannot liberate for your own use even though say for example, your slimmer ROM now takes up 250MB out of that 500MB partition as opposed to nearly 350MB earlier. You cannot resize the ROM, Installer, External Data partition because it is hardcoded by the bootloader. You can however send your user apps to reside in the ROM paritition if you like by using Titanium Backup.

Change the shortcuts on the lockscreen by pressing down on your screen where it says Shortcuts, when you do this you will be taken to a different screen where you can remove and add new shortcuts simply by pressing the icon you want to get rid of and dragging it into the thrash can that appears at the bottom of the screen.
