Police investigating 230 people suspected to be involved in scams

SINGAPORE: A total of 230 people are being investigated for their suspected involvement in scams as scammers or money mules, the police said on Thursday (Dec 31).

This followed a two-week enforcement operation conducted between Dec 19 and Dec 30 by officers from the Commercial Affairs Department and the seven police land divisions.

The 230 people assisting with investigations comprise 151 men and 79 women, aged between 16 and 66.

The suspects are believed to be involved in 388 cases of scams, comprising mainly of Internet love scams, e-commerce scams, social media impersonation scams, as well as fake gambling platform and loan scams.

The victims purportedly lost more than S$2.9 million, said the police.

"The suspects are being investigated for the offence of cheating or money laundering," the police said.

Anyone found guilty of cheating can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined. If found guilty of money laundering, offenders can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined up to S$500,000.

"The police take a serious view against any person who may be involved in scams, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law," they said in the news release.

"To avoid being an accomplice to crimes, members of the public should always reject requests by others to use your bank account or mobile lines as you will be held accountable if these are linked to illegal transactions."

Instead if feeding them free meals, make them clean public toilets daily for the duration of their jail term.

last month my wife kena this similar ninja van COD delivery scam by some PRC seller, i believe the scammer gotten victim address from other source maybe who has used ninja van before. They mail out item that was never ordered on COD term.

My wife was expecting a parcel and thought this was actually the item, but when she received the parcel she start to doubt as the product size was different so she opened it in front of the delivery guy. Ok she was too naive (the husband is more experience online shopper than her [laugh]) and thought she has to accept and hence pay the guy, partly also pity him in a way just like one of the victim in the link below.

I told her to make a police report just for record purpose when i had an online chat with ninja van, they say they will check but i also told them i had made a police report so that they know if the police call -_-

2 weeks later just last week she received a call from ninja van telling her they will refund the amount. I understand this was not ninja van's fault and they just doing damage control to their service being used in a scam.

Oh. Maybe ninjavan didn't lose the money. They should hold the $60 in escrow for a week or two to see if got any complaints haha.

Actually this isn't a new scam - think it has been around for many yrs already.

I received a similar notification from ninja Van this morning. Out of sudden, ninja van SMS me about a parcel with SGD29 COD, which is going to deliver today. I was puzzled because cannot recall that  I order anything recently😂.

Do you suddenly receive Friend Request from strange Asian/Caucasian girls in Facebook?

I am suspicious and decided to accept so as to do a quick check on their profiles.  They seem to have a lot of Nigerian male friends and received a lot of "Likes" from them.

Confirming my suspicion, I quickly unfriend and siam.

Hahahahha.
