Jamesc Hypersonic July 26, 2012 Share July 26, 2012 Good idea, bro! Besides being SYT, and look like SNSD, any other criteria (eg, bust size, etc) is required to be granted PR status ? No need! Anything more than a mouthful is a waste! Anyway reminds me of the time I went to buy a bra for my daughter. The lady at the shop asked me what size and I said I am not sure. Then she said like oranges and I said smaller. So she said like eggs and I said yes exactly like eggs. Fried eggs. ↡ Advertisement
Galantspeedz Turbocharged July 26, 2012 Share July 26, 2012 Not determining the "best" nurse Determining the "best" person to offer PR to. So the scorecard would show a) Working experience in xxxxx industry b) Education c) ??????? If have a stipulated amount of experience in the targeted industry then get extra points. So 5 years as a nurse might earn 8 points, while 5 years as a copywriter might earn 1 or 0 points. Why? because the nurse is identified by the "powers that be" to be more valuable to the country than a copywriter. Quite transperant, easy to follow and easy to adjust when the need arises right? not really... if we used what you just mentioned and put it in sgpore context.. we are gonna have alot of construction workers as PRs. You want talent, you need talent. offer them money, offer them convinence and they will naturally come. Get the locals to learn from these talents.... you don't need 'to offer them PR to make them stay....neither will be this ensure the country has got what they deem as most valuable. Jman888 Moderator July 26, 2012 Share July 26, 2012 why these elite PR need to send their kids to top school, if can afford, by all mean go international school. Govt should just let them join normal school and leave the TOP school to local. Oh, just out in the papers today - I think this is what caused the angst that started this thread... Personally, why is there a need to target "certain" schools. Are they really better? I think we've already been given the assurance that all primary schools are really the same, and each have developed their own special niche areas, so there's no need for parents to fight tooth and nail to get their kids into certain schools which they think are "better"

Why would you have construction workers as PR? You only have those that the govt is targeting for PR - because they are the ones that get the "points". And remember, it is about selecting the top 100 or 300 or whatever. It is about allocating places - not letting everyone that applies to get in. It is about saying, look - we have 300 places, but 1000 applicants - how do we select the best 300. Then saying, well, ok - you got a degree here, that gives you one point, you have work experience in an area we are targeting that gives you 1 point, etc etc - then letting in the 300 people that score the highest. Isn't that the essence of meritocracy?
TVT Supercharged July 26, 2012 Share July 26, 2012 Looking specifically at the education policy, PR have now been excluded from 27 schools in Singapore. You'd also have to wonder if this is a good thing? Good for citizen parents? Definitely! Isit? Which are these 27 schools huh ???

Nurse we need, you give PR. so Construction worker, we also need, by same standard we should give them PR. if not, it will be another form of discrimination. Govt should just let them join normal school and leave the TOP school to local. How do you define "normal" and how do you define "top" How far towards "normal" do you want to go. Do you think there are benefits in however a more diverse environment at school. And also, I think this is another policy that needs looking at The Compulsory Education Act states that Singaporean parents must send their child, at age six, to attend a "national primary school". The rule is compulsory, and excludes international schools, and does not apply to PRs, but only to Singaporeans. If a Singaporean wishes to send their kids to an international school - they should be allowed. One would presume that as long as the school is allowed to operate here, it meets certain standards of "proper" (as in, not abusive, subersive etc) standards - so it should be up to parents where they want to send kids. So long as they can afford the fees.

Nope is not discrimination to award a finite resources based on rarity of talent. The difference is - (theoretically at least, because I don't have any actual figures) we need to offer PR to attract the numbers of nurses we need. But we don't need to offer PR to attract construction workers, as even without the offer of PR they are lining up around the block to come here. That's the crux of the argument - if you have enough nurses, or willing to pay enough $$$ so that whether or not got PR is not an issue, then there is no need to give PR. If don't have enough nurses, or not willing to pay enough $$$$, and the offer of PR attracts more nurses then the answer is yes. Isn't that fairly self evident? As a nation, you can choose where the balance lies I guess - if willing to pay enough for hospital care such that can pay nurses enough not to need PR, then do it, if want cheaper hospital care but with more PR, then do that. But the discussion shouldn't be bogged in nurses only. The idea of "points" can be applied to whatever industry the govt deems important enough.
