Stupid to try and attract talent that the country is lacking? Do explain.

You're asking a wrong group of people.... As a citizen, who would really say welcome! welcome! Don't you see lots of resistants from the local OZs themself? I'm sure some NZer as well though I've never heard much of it....

stupid .. because instead of making the job more attractive for citizens ... they rather import foreigners and marginalize the citizens.

It doesn't have to be an either / or.

Especially for jobs that need a long training time (like nursing)

Can make the job more attractive to attract more locals, and at the same time attract foreigners to fill the gap.

After all - england is poaching our nurses, but making it more attractive, why shouldn't we poach from another country?

the points system is stupid........

Why? Shouldn't PR be targeted to the very "best of the best" for a country's needs? Isn't a system that is as objective and transparent as possible a good way of doing things?

If you get 500 applicants for 350 places (pulling figures out of my arse), wouldn't a points system be best to make sure that the "best" 350 get those places?

One day when you grow old and finally need help in the hospital, then you will realize there are no local or foreign nurses there to help you.

heck, even now when i go many areas of work are employing foreign workers. what makes u think there will be no foreign nurses?

no local nurses maybe.

Looking specifically at the education policy, PR have now been excluded from 27 schools in Singapore. You'd also have to wonder if this is a good thing? Good for citizen parents? Definitely!

...

Oh, just out in the papers today - I think this is what caused the angst that started this thread...

Personally, why is there a need to target "certain" schools. Are they really better?

I think we've already been given the assurance that all primary schools are really the same, and each have developed their own special niche areas, so there's no need for parents to fight tooth and nail to get their kids into certain schools which they think are "better" [;)][lipsrsealed]

determine best....

we will take your example: nurses

to me to be a best nurse is to be attentive and caring, on top of being knowledgeable.

so the scorecard shows:

pls circle one: not caring, little caring, very caring, super caring

This one I agree - I chose the school that was nearest my house.

But that is separate issue that didn't want to start.

Not determining the "best" nurse

Determining the "best" person to offer PR to.

So the scorecard would show

a) Working experience in xxxxx industry

b) Education

c) ???????

If have a stipulated amount of experience in the targeted industry then get extra points.

So 5 years as a nurse might earn 8 points, while 5 years as a copywriter might earn 1 or 0 points.

Why? because the nurse is identified by the "powers that be" to be more valuable to the country than a copywriter.

Quite transperant, easy to follow and easy to adjust when the need arises right?

(edited)

Probation.

when on probation, no equal rights with perm staff, no mc, no leave.

want equal rights? clear probation, make it to perm staff.

not happy? find another job.

Good idea, bro! :D

Besides being SYT, and look like SNSD, any other criteria (eg, bust size, etc) is required to be granted PR status ?
