Home Aircon

just would like to ask you guys since I have no knowledge of home aircon. for the pipes, is it only using copper pipes? are there brands which use 'stainless steel' or aluminium pipes?I have to admit that I am a new BTO house owner 4 years ago and I know nuts about aircon specs and installation.so I just proceed with whatever I'm comfortable with at that time without any research.

Used my aircon coming to 4 years. Only recently hot air blow out. Called a "famous" aircon guy, Edd** from EDMW to take a look. His technician (not the boss)came down to look see and he went to the compressor. He then indicated to me gas pressure is "0". then he saw that the pipes used and claimed that the pipes used are aluminium and that they were inferior as the pipes leak easily. This means, no matter if he top up the gas,it will leak again in a matter of days which would be a waste. Immediately,he called his boss. His boss then told me that I need to replace all the pipes as his technician won't topup the gas if I still use the 'inferior' pipes. and the cost would be $280 for each FCU. in the end, nothing was done and I had to pay $30 for transport charges.

any experienced bros can help on this?

  • Do I really need to replace my pipes?
  • Would a total replacement of pipes cost that much?
  • I thought of getting a 2nd opinion but any bros got a verified recommendation? so far, all the contractors I get from the net are not worth recommending. EDMW even worse, so many trolls giving fake recommendations.

i never hear of air con pipe using aluminum, only copper.

The thickness of the pipe is critical as invertor type  runs on higher pressure. Its gauge 22 or something.

I have nvr heard of aluminium piping.

You shd have asked them to pump in the gas & monitor how long it lasts before the aircon is not blowing cold air.

Is it only 1 fan coil unit that's having the problem?

btw, aircon has to be used regularly to circulate the gas.

he said his usage actually went up because of the haze but his electricity consumption did not.

If your pipe is conceal, finding out the pipe leakage is only possible at both end of the pipe. Otherwise, cost of troubleshooting is almost the same as replacing it.

I can only advise you that if you were to replace the pipe, do not joint the pipe. The only joint should be at the compressor and the split unit. 100% of the pipe leakage is at the joint....

btw, Ive never seen an aircon pipe made of other material other than copper...

About 7 years back, the serviceman said the I also may have a leak. But he didn't recommend to replace anything, but instead top up my gas and asked me to monitor. If the gas can last for for more than a year then not economical to replace anything. So mine lasted around 2 years for the next top up, and then til now, surprisingly still going strong. The last servicing, which is about 6 years after, serviceman didn't mentioned anything about low gas, so I assume it's still sufficient.

Aluminum pipe is much stronger and more expensive than copper piping.

Unless there's leak or kink at the pipes, there's no need to replace.

"inferior" pipes ?

so far no testing was done. the technician only said that this pipe has slowly leaked over time and even though he top up the gas, it will leak again.so no point in him topping up.

I have nvr heard of aluminium piping.

I already asked him to just pump the gas for me to monitor but he die die don't want unless I replace my pipes. he said he don't want to spoil his company reputation coz I may complain that the servicing is not good as the gas may leak out soon.

all 3 FCU blowing hot air.

I'm only using my aircons on weekends.
