Cyclist Problem

Because its quite difficult to cycle on those cycling paths as they aren't dedicated cycling paths. Can't cycle fast on those paths.

It is pointless to explain further to ppl who don't really cycle. U & I would understand.

Anyway, i extended my invitation to him already. It is up to him to accept it or not.

Actually I personally feel that 1.5m is not really necessary, maybe about 1m is alright. When I ride, I also don't expect others to give way to me and get into accident with others. But some cars(especially taxis) just simply like to drive very near to a cyclist and if happens that he slips or fall, the consequences will disastrous. I have seen before some cyclists riding together in 2 or 3 files and occupied the whole lane. This behavior is not right, first you never pay road tax and really it is not necessary to ride like that. Unless you are overtaking your friend, single file should be the way. It takes 2 hands to clap. Drivers just give way and keep a safe distance from that bike and bikers just obey the rules on the road and be considerate to the drivers too. I always appreciate and say thanks to drivers who give way to me when I ride.

I think it's also related to speed and the size of the vehicle. When I am cycling, I don't mind if small vehicles travelling slowly pass me with 0.5-1m gap. Similarly, if a vehicle is travelling fast but passes in the next lane, I also wouldn't mind too much. But if a vehicle, especially a larger one, travels fast and passes within 0.5m or less, I feel it is highly dangerous. Of course, motorbikes are small but dangerous because like some cyclists, they tend to make erratic and unpredictable moves. Both speed of the other vehicle as well as physical proximity increase the danger to the cyclist, because both reduce time to react for both parties to avoid a collision. Basically, if I can reach out with my hand and touch the vehicle, i feel that is too close (about 1m). I think the 1.5 metres comes about to allow an additional margin for error given that it is often difficult to gauge distances so accurately and given that the consequences of misjudgement can be catastrophic (for the cyclist).

Your topic come just in time.

I just got into a accident with a cyclist last week.

On a 2 lane road at traffic light. Left lane turn left only. Right lane can turn left also can go straight.

I am on the extreme left lane which is TURN LEFT only. While turning left, a cyclist cycling VERY

FAST on my left hand side GOING STRAIGHT (which is my blind spot, did not see him as looking out for pedestrian crossing the road). I start turning and he BANG on my rear and fell down.

I heard a loud "thud" and quickly stopped the car and got out to take a look.

A young man in his 20s fell down and his legs and arms are bleeding. He got up and F me

upside down with many pedestrians looking.

I let him F for a good 3 minutes and I told him:

Me: "Are you ok? I think you are ok as you still can F me so loud"

Young man: " You think you drive big car big F? Don't know how to give way to cyclist?

What are you going to do now?"

Me: " Firstly, I am NOT going to give you any $$$ or bring you to a clinic. Either I call 999 or 995

for you or you can claim my insurance or you can also punch me now."

Young man: " You @#$%^. F off lah"

Then he just cycle off. I really don't know how to handle this kind of situation.

Agree cyclist was in the wrong, he should have kept on the left side of the right lane and not entered the left turning lane. Sometimes, when traffic is heavy, it takes cyclists some time to filter from the left to the right lane but a good cyclist will anticipate in advance such a requirement just like a good driver would. There is no excuse for not anticipating that you were going to turn left, after all you were in a left turning lane. Simply suicidal from the cyclist's point of view and not practising defensive cycling at all.

As I know, all accidents with cyclists (and pedestrians and foreign registered vehicles) need to be reported to the TP. Based on the situation, you would not get in trouble. But if the cyclists took your number and reported you, you could get in trouble - not for the accident, but for not reporting it.

Not reporting could also mean an insurance claim on the part of the cyclist would need to be paid out of your own pocket as your insurance company has the right to repudiate claims for incidents not reported within 24 hours. I learned this lesson the painful way - no visible damage to either parties vehicle but the other party then reported damage a few days later and my insurer repudiated the claim as I had not reported the incident.

What's NSRCC and how is the above an explanation to my posts? If you are trying to tell me that you cant maintain speed because NSRCC is a park and there are people obstructing cyclist, then arent cyclist guilty of slowing down traffic of road vehicles? So cyclist reason is because people slow them down and cant maintain good speed while drivers and all normal traffic has to give 1.5m ..etc. It seems here that the grp of people who wants to take aint so keen when it their turn to give. No wonder some cyclist in their fancy gear run red lights. They must maintain 30km/h!

Instead of assuming and making a fool out of yourself, why don't you take up Davidtch's offer. I'll come along as well ^_^

Thanks. Got a witness willing to testify for me if anything.

Almost 2 weeks already, check with my insurance on friday, so far nothing yet.

So for your case, you pay the $$$ out of yr pocket? That's unlucky for you.

My dad had a similar experience few years back while turning left into slip road to expressway. Stupid cyclist (those racing bike type) tried to go straight after entering the slip road and crashed into the side of the car. Fell off his bike but was not hurt as he could cycle off quickly.

We made an insurance report as required by GIA and was penalised for over a year as they withheld large part of NCD "pending claims". We didn't even claim against our policy to fix the dent in the door.

There was a witness in another car behind who saw it and who stopped to give his particulars in case of any claim but apparently it didn;t make any difference.

Now I avoid those d@mn cyclists like the plague.

I think the authority should implemented law to let cyclist know that they do not have a right of way when they cycle on pavement. And if they knock onto people walking at the pavement, the cyclist should be fine or jail. Cause i notice there are more and more cyclists who are cycling on the pavement really endanger to people walking along the pavement!

Every Sunday morning, you will see tour de france wannabes taking short cut from East Coast Park Service Road to Changi Coast Road, AGAINST the traffic.

Instead of pointing finger at other road users for not respecting cyclists, why not you guys sort this out among yourselves first.

Trust me, some cyclist will get killed at this spot sooner or later, get the white bicycle ready.

It took almost a year after I lodged a complaint against the insurer with Fidrec but eventually they agreed to take over the claim. During this time I was served with numerous lawyer letters as the person engaged their own lawyer against me directly instead of going through their insurer. Funny thing is, after Aviva agreed to take over the case I received a writ of summons couple of months later against me personally. After that they apparently settled. But they did not copy me on any of the communications or negotations and only let me know the settlement amount after I asked them. Now I have sworn never to do business with Aviva (car insurance, other insurance or otherwise) as long as I live.

From looks of it, regulating cycling is a touchy issue the government likely hands-off as long as possible. No brownie points either outcome. Too polarised, and too complex. No reason to risk their political credits on this ...

damn unlucky to get hit by a car while riding along upper thomson road going... i was on the extreme left lane, the most left side of the lane and yet this bugger hit me with his side mirror... sunday morning and there are in fact not many cars travelling along te road (6 am) ..i did not eexpect the car to be traveling so near me when the other lanes are free!..

for chris sake there are no exits or lanes to turn left to and this chap can drive so near to me.. I had 2 cat eyes and led flash indicator behind me . and right now thanks to this as.s hole, i am lying at home with my right arm bandaged. and using my left hand to type out tthis reply.

I always give way to cyclists and why others can't do it? oh man..

This is what most drivers believe [laugh] . But in actual facy, its a POLLUTION TAX based on the engine capacity. Infact, Emmision Tax is a more appropriate name for it, like some 1st world countries are already trying out. You are paying because of the pollution caused by your vehicle.

The amount collected from "Road Tax" is definitely insufficient to build roads, even without factoring in the land cost (just use HDB land price as benchmark). The money comes from income tax, GST, etc etc, which everyone, whether car owner, bicycle owner or BMWs, have to pay.

Tax is tax and we call it as what it is. I am also not taking about the amount and whose engine is bigger.

The point is cyclists have no business on our roads.

Our roads are simply not safe. Too many kuku drivers. No malice. Just kuku. I am one. :D

Even when they are completely empty I see people cycling on the road?

Anyway, wouldnt cyclist slow traffic down when they enter the roads? So your logic is i rather slow people down than let other slow me down even though the activity of mine is a leisure activity? Thats nice!

The reason many recreational cyclists cycle on the road rather than on that path is not because the pedestrians slow them down. Its because there are pedestrians and its quite hard to avoid them especially if there are young children running around.

How do you know the shared path was completely empty? There wasn't anyone on the other parts of the path that wasn't in your sight yet?

Yes. You got it right. The amount is not important because everybody pays a different amount based on the size of their engines. It just happens that bicycles have no engines so they pay the least. That is why bicycles are still allowed on the roads.

The reason many drivers is telling you bunch of tour de france wannabes to get off the road is not because you slow us down or inconvenience us. It's because there is a horrendous amount of "kuku", "blur", "fxxked up", "bobo" and <insert any other adjectives you can think of here> drivers on the road which are capable of mowing you lot down in a single move, potentially causing multiple fatalities or life-changing injuries in the process. This includes an increasing number of reckless and possibly un-licensed drivers operating heavy good vehicles and other heavy commercial vehicles such as prime movers.

And telling drivers to be more considerate or give way to you "road cyclists" or "recreational cyclists" or "whatever-fxxk cyclists" isn't going to HELP AT ALL when 2 tonnes or more of pure steel comes barrelling in at you on the road.

Apparently the increasing number of cycling fatalities on our roads doesn't deter cyclists from risking their lives on the road. So be it.

Drivers and cyclists should just agree to disagree and move on, no point huffing and puffing and typing a whole load of b-------t that will have no relevance any way.

Because at the end of the day, it is not we drivers who might end up as road kill on Singapore roads, or worse end up paralysed and becoming a burden to their families. It's YOU self-proclaimed road cyclists and lane armstrong wannabes. I've made my peace with that fact and I will sleep easy. The rest is up to you folks!

Seems like you are the only driver in this thread that thinks this way. The previous posts all ask cyclists to get off the roads because we are slowing down the traffic flow and not paying road tax.

So far my experience is that heavier vehicles and buses are much more tolerant towards cyclists than normal passenger cars. I cycle on the road almost everyday to work and back home and usually those that overtake very closely are those drivers who think we are slowing them down.

How am I going to cycle to work if I don't cycle on the road since its illegal to cycle on the pavements? Don't want to drive as I can't get a parking lot at my office and taking public transport almost doubles my travelling time as compared to cycling.
