serenade 6th Gear February 14, 2023 Share February 14, 2023 OT. To me, this is the ultimate wagon. The original Audi RS6 Avant with the same 5.0 V10 engine used in Lamborghinis. boonhat_91 6th Gear April 5, 2024 Share April 5, 2024 Can't believe it has been a year and a few months since my last post on this topic. One year of waiting for durian to drop, but instead seeing new records set over and over. Anyway this Jan some family circumstances, coinciding with the COE drop, pushed me to shop seriously for a car. My sports car dream remains a dream, but if I had to choose a family-friendly car I had always eyed a wagon. Luckily, my CO was on board with this. With that approval, she left me to do the shopping.. Reveal hidden contents A few more criteria came into play: 1. Age. We were looking for preferably 5 years or younger. We were changing up from a 2016-reg car, so it didn't make a lot of sense to get another 2016 car, and probably not 2017 either. The whole of 2023 I had been regularly "window shopping" on Sgcarmart thinking that 2018-reg was the 5 year mark - so imagine my slight disbelief when shopping in Jan 2024, 2018-reg is now failing this criteria! 2. Reliability. Due to some business, the car has to be driven across the causeway and back at least twice a week - rain or shine, school holidays or not. For this reason I chose to eliminate DCT options. Perhaps this is an unfounded dinosaur thinking, but given the high possibility of regularly encountering jam and stop-start traffic, we didn't want to deal with this risk to the gearbox. None of the current new cars (within our budget) interest me, so off to the secondhand market! All the Levorg I've seen are 2016/2017, so unfortunately have to eliminate that based on age. i30 Wagons are 2018 and sometimes 2019 pops up. Interesting observation: many units I saw were relatively high mileage, with quite a few close to or exceeding 100k km. Perhaps a testament to its reliability? Or a ticking time bomb? Mileage aside, it has a DCT (somewhat unproven territory for Hyundai) so unfortunately have to eliminate this option too. As of posting last year, my personal top 3 were Mazda 6 Wagon, Levorg and i30 Wagon. So it was very sad to have to eliminate 2 of my top 3. Frankly, the 2 eliminated would have been "wiser" choices in terms of both selling price and road tax. In the last year I also started falling in love with Passat Variant and Volvo V60, but those are obviously a different budget class. I had also considered Skoda Octavia or even Superb (since the depre was similar to what the Mazda 6 Wagon was going for) as they are both wagon-ish with big boot and liftback style, but unfortunately these are DCT too. Eliminated Peugeot 308SW mainly due to French reputation, but also no >2018 units for sale. Likewise with Opel Astra Sports Tourer - unloved German in Sg so unknown reliability and parts availability. Also no >2018s for sale. So the finalists in the wagon category were Mazda 6 and Honda Shuttle. Frankly, Shuttle is the rational choice - it's a wagon, it's cheaper (price and road tax), and plenty of >2018s. In fact I could stick strictly to the age criteria and search for 2019s or younger for Shuttle. But I made the mistake of arranging a viewing and test drive of a Mazda 6 unit before the motorshow weekend. Given that the Mazda 6 was already one of my top 3, needless to say I was now fully convinced that this was the wagon I wanted. The bigger surprise was my CO (she test drove too), who had fallen in love with it too. The only problem was the age, as this was a 2018-reg unit. >2019s were rare to come by at my time of shopping. We did manage to test drive a 2019 unit a few days later, but at this point we were not 100% committed yet as we wanted to check out the motorshow! Checking out the motorshow only confirmed that there was no new cars interesting to me (WRX wagon obviously out of budget). We molested the crossovers galore, but if I am honest with myself, my heart was already set on a wagon. Still had to look around for due diligence sake. The cheapest Cat A car was around 130k? A Hyundai Avante was around 150+k? Using Avante for reference because my BIL bought a brand new Elantra back in 2018. Meanwhile that 2019 Mazda 6 that we test drove was asking for a little over 100k. At the end of the day we left the motorshow convinced that we are getting a secondhand car. After the motorshow, I had also floated the idea of test driving a Subaru Forester and of course a Shuttle. Need to make a more informed decision after all. At this point we could not reach a deal on the 2019 Mazda, so I was prepared to continue watching the market for suitable units. The COE predictably went up post-motorshow, and in my opinion used car prices did not go down much from the time COE price reached the peak. Unfortunately we were only free to arrange viewings and test drives on weekends, so the Forester and Shuttle would never materialize. A few days later the salesman for the 2018 unit which we test drove before would reach out to us with a satisfactory offer, and the deal was sealed. If you have read the whole story until here, thank you very much! Long story short, we are now happy owners of a Mazda 6 Wagon. It's a long story and in truth it's kinda pointless, because our hearts very much won over our heads from the start. 2 months and 4000km later still very happy. It's comfortably powerful and smooth, and sports mode is very fun. I can't stop stealing looks at it after parking. The boot space is good too - after folding down the seats I managed to fit my road bike inside without having to remove the front wheel. We're going to drive up to KL next week, looking forward to that.

In my case I was choosing between a used C200 estate or a new 6 wagon and eventually went for the latter due to cost and concern about conti reliability. I guess the fact that Mazda shortened the wheelbase slightly for the wagon also appealed to me… Have you done any mods? ↡ Advertisement
