@As7eroidS Look to the Cat A CoE EVs. There's a bunch available now from hatchbacks, SUVs to station wagons that can seat up to seven people. Priced around $140k to under $200k - depending on what you want. If 99% of the time is around the city, the Cat A EV is suitable. Can always hire an ICE vehicle for the 1% long road trip across the causeway. Road tax for Cat A is reasonable at $1.5k per year and most have sufficient torque to move off the line in stop/go traffic around the city.

Some examples are: Aion Y, Citroen eC4X, Ora Good Cat, Aion V, BYD Seal, Tesla Model Y, BYD Atto 3, Tesla Model 3, MG 4, Omoda E5, MG ZS EV and BYD M6 (can seat up to seven people). Upcoming new models that I'm interested in are: Geely EX5/Proton eMas7 and Leapmotor C10.

I've purposely left out Neta X as the parent company in China is in financial trouble and will most likely go under this year.

First to disappear is Neta

Troubled China EV brand Neta shutters Singapore showroom less than three months after opening. The  showroom was empty of cars and personnel during operating hours, calls went unanswered

The latest MGS5 looks good!

Otherwise BYDs are always the best value buys although personally i abhor anything too common/mass market.

Neutral Newbie

I'm getting a new car but can't really convince myself to get electric. For those using electric. Have you ever regret getting them?

MG's new S5 EV looks interesting. I like that SAIC has listened to complaints on the MG E4 and put some physical buttons for commonly used volume and AC controls. Also is rear wheel drive - so thumbs up to them on this.

SAIC is competing in a crowded market with many other Chinese brands in the same compact SUV segment. See below for some comparisons.

Can ignore Neta X as they closed shop here in Singapore recently. Believe BYD, Aion and eMas 7 are all competitive to MGS5. More comparisons on battery and power is below.

If the MGS5 EV is not in the Cat A CoE category - it's going to be a tuff sell as there's plenty of others that will have this option. It'll come down to pricing, features and how well it drives.

Its definitely Cat A around $165k.

For me, i don't like most of the Cat A EV designs like Good Cat, Aion Y, Dongfeng Box, etc. The Atto 3 outside ok but inside trying a bit too hard to be funky. Omoda 5 just looks weird (don't know how to explain). So if i was looking for for a Cat A EV now, MGS5 is the only choice. Actually its a pity Nissan didn't give Qashqai E-power. So weird. They can do it for small car like Note and big car like X Trail but somehow not Qashqai. If QQ had epower, would really be a good contender.

Just got an update (I am ex-MG customer and still have close relationship with my SA who is the best SA i have ever known) that non-guaranteed price at Suntec Roadshow (until this weekend) is under $160k. No ARF so depre is $16k/year. But comes with 10 yr/200k battery warranty!

My only concern with MG is it's reliability. The MG S5 EV is based on the MG 4 EV hatchback. According to survey carried out by WhatCar? in the UK, the MG 4 EV came last in reliability in the 2024 survey here: https://www.whatcar.com/news/most-reliable-cars/n27337. Some of the repair costs were significant and MG 4 EV owners had to bear this.

The same reliability issue came up for the MG ZS EV. The MG S5 EV is the replacement of the MG ZS EV.

I can only say u will see these online complaints for many cars. But what u don't see are those owners that have no complaints (how to complain that got no complain lol). So what u see might only be 10% of the total buyer population? For me, I own a French car for 3 problem-free years already (touch wood) despite what people say online. It gave me less trouble than my previous German and Korean rides.

I almost never look at these international reliability surveys. Too many unknowns of how they do and how honest they are, etc. But what i know is I trust Eurokars. I was one of the pioneer owners of MG HS in SG. Never regretted it. And i have friends who still have them (now in the 5th year) and have no significant issues.

I am not sure what kind of issues during warranty period that owner have to bear other than self damage.

@Kar_lover  Thinking about making a specific thread for the MGS5 EV since it's going to be out on the roads soon. For those who are interested can ask questions in the MGS5 thread rather find it here in this massive electric car thread.

Just not sure which discussion group the MGS5 thread should belong to? Is it Conti Talk or China Talk?
