EV production (Tesla or BYD) without obscene govt subsidies in tax credits and rebates ... who can afford with the true cost of EV production?

BYD can sell cheap is because winnie pay for it to dominate the EV market globally ... let's see this is sustainable

as for charging ... can debate until cows come home ... is it practical

So better buy EV before the govt subsidies get removed?

I find that the camps for EVs and non-EV supporters are severely polarising. It's either no EVs for the next 1000 years or EVs are the future of humanity. In another thread, some are saying that EVs depreciate by 50% within 1.5 years when the evidence is in stark contrast to those unfounded claims.

Personally, I was anti-EV previously as well (driving a fuel guzzling Alphard now & previous ride's fuel consumption are all 7-8 km/l) due to the upfront costs (road tax), lack of charging options and resale value.

But as in life, if one only chooses to focus on the 'bad' then obviously, it is only the 'bad' that one can see.

Thus, after more research into the costs (annual depreciation of ICE vs EV, and savings in petrol/maintenance), road tax (just stay away from insanely powered EVs) and resale value, I am now looking forward to becoming an EV owner in time to come. In fact, the pull to EV is getting irresistible by such simple acts as 'staying in an idling car with AC turned on while the  engine the motor is also not running'. This might seem mundane, but for a family chauffer who does plenty of waiting on the sideline for the kid/wife, this will be a godsend, especially in the heat of Singapore.

Was contemplating the hybrid or PHEV option, and while some might say its the best of both worlds, I find its the best of neither. Thus, like the rest of the EV owners here, I look forward to taking the plunge and becoming a full EV convert. If there are indeed risks, then I have been well informed by the non-EV camp and I shall pay the price willingly for my foolishness! 🤪

I jumped into the EV camp a month ago.

Now enjoying every bit of it. Driving an EV just need to learn to manage the chargjng portion.

In state of topping up petrol always at 1/4 tank. Now every now and than at any car park, if there is a charging station I just make use of it and charge my battery.  A lot of time at a mall it is at a better location and no need to search for parking lot.

The saving for the past 1 month is 1/3 of on charging compare to my previous petrol price. Which I am using 98 and with a FC of around 9.5km/l with my ext turbo SUV.

congrats...

eventually i think all will move over to EV....matter of time, maybe majority will move over...

i was reading up on EV as well on the batt part....they wrote, that mobile emits a tiny bit of radiation....but for EV, that radiation is multipled...hence, in the long run sitting on the batt is not good..some pple will get headaches, nausea, palpitation and irritation...some pple nothing...so really depends.

so how did you feel?

just reading up and for a general knowledge...

Don't think Chinese govt subsidizes every BYD Atto 3 that is exported to overseas market.

They might have supported and subsidized EV development as an industrial policy but I have not read anything that implied that every BYD we buy here is partially paid for by Chinese tax payers (based on cash cost excluding development cost).  Happy to be proven wrong.

Anyway, like what Beregond mentioned, more reasons to buy if that is true.   We don't have an auto industry and auto jobs to protect, so unlike the Europeans and Americans, we should welcome more of such "scams".  😂😂😂

depend on how we see it ...

BYD received tax credits or incentives ... the more cars that push out of the factory, the more they received

Winnie throw obscene rebates for changing ICE to EV (yes govt policy), this help BYD capture the local market with song song cash cow

BYD receive credits, incentives, rebates, policy to spur sales making BYD song song super strong balance sheet

with strong balance sheet and billions of profits, they can price BYD EV car for export market CHEAPLY (govt policy to capture export market) ...

sorry, i mean BYD car is price competitively 🙂  .... must buy ... MTL !

BYD EV is the king in emerging markets like South America, Africa continents and Indonesia and Malaysia also many many liao ...

SG market is kacang puteh la ... no need to mention ....

So long the EV has to sell in EU/US, it has to comply to very strict EMF radiation regulations with regards to human health, as well as interference to surrounding electronics within the car or outside the car (traffic signals, cell phone signals etc). Yes, they do test this during homologation.

EVs emit extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation. It is a type of non-ionising radiation, which means that it does not have enough energy to break chemical bonds in human DNA. The levels of ELF have to be well below the World Health Organisation’s exposure limits. Compared to taking an X-ray which is ionising radiation that will penetrate human tissues, radiation from EV is not a real concern.

Probably one is more likely to get headache, nausea and whiplash from the instant acceleration of a high powered EV rather than the radiation itself 😆

No I'm not in the medical field. But concerns about radiation from EVs have been asked a lot of times before here, so I did some reading up on my own.

So far I have not grown another head in close to 3 years of driving around in an EV 😆

Most of the Chinese govt subsidies are for domestic EV buyers (like in the States and EU, see below article) although it has been cut repeatedly over the years and is now at US$2k per vehicle, much lower than Biden's US$7.5k and EU's EUR3-5k (depending on countries).

BYD gross margin is 22% and if you take away all the tax rebate/ subsidies reported in its 2023 annual report, BYD will still remain profitable.   BYD might have also benefitted from cheap loans and land cost to build its factories, etc but based on manufacturing cost, it no longer relies on direct govt subsidies to survive. That shows how far BYD has come.

Yup, we are on the same page on what China's Industrial policy has achieved for the EV industry.  It didn't quite do it for Proton but it sure works well for the Chinese.
