Learning Malay is a good suggestion by her.

Non exam based. Purely conversational.

This way, more will understand their indon maids, and go JB can mingle better with locals.

All the same, it is rather strange to have a National Language that is not taught compulsorily in schools. I have no problem with Malay, and most of us (born and breds) pick up "Melayu Pasar" along the way, but if we're truly going to continue recognising Malay as THE National Language, it needs to be taught formally to everyone, at least to Primary 6 level. Make it a non-examinable subject, but compulsory all the same.

Otherwise, it just becomes an exercise in lip service.

many kids are singing 'blindly' with no proper pronunciation nor understanding the meaning [rolleyes]

f the purpose of a national anthem is to forge national identity and rally citizens towards a common vision or goal, why choose a language that four-fifths of Singaporeans today neither speak nor understand?

She needs some history lessons.

The national anthem is in Malay because the national language is Malay.

She needs her head to be kicked in.

LOL....in that case Ms Zhang should also do an update on her name so as to reflect her intelligence and call herself "Dumb Ass".

Any country out there suka suka "update" their national anthem? An anthem is written only when a country gain independence. You do not change it to match your shoes or your branded bag.

Later such morons will suggest change the national flag as it needs an update also. They will suggest to remove the cresent moon since we are not a muslim country, make the flag all red in colour and leave the five stars....wtf... isn't that the Chinese flag?!

Ms Zhang should be hang for treason. :D

The stars here and the stars there are different in colour.

White vs Yellow?

Maybe it's good to use transparent stars to reflect the state of things?

Nothing wrong with update, as long as it reflect more closely what the people feel.

Come, fellow Singaporeans

Let us progress towards happiness together

May our noble aspiration bring

Singapore success

Come, let us unite

In a new spirit

Let our voices soar as one

Quoting from Wikipedia

  Quote
Singer Taufik Batisah was criticized for incorrectly singing the word berseru (to proclaim) instead of bersatu (to unite) during his rendition of Majulah Singapura before the start of the 2009 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix on 27 September 2009. A Straits Times poll then found that out of 50 people only 10 were able to sing the national anthem perfectly. Most people got between 80 and 90% of the lyrics right, while six could only recite the first line or less. Although many correctly stated that the title of the anthem meant "Onward Singapore", a majority did not understand the meaning of the anthem. However, most of the persons surveyed disagreed that the anthem should be in English, one respondent saying: "It's better in Malay because there's a cultural history to it and [it] is more meaningful, and has traces to our roots."[8]

Using the language for only the national anthem is a token attempt to accord importance to it. If there is any commitment, there should be more practical ways to do it so that it can be appreciated and used as part of daily life.
