SINGAPORE: A Singaporean family is now safely back home after a harrowing experience early Sunday morning in Johor Bahru.

 

It was past midnight when 37-year-old Rita Zahara was driving back to Singapore from Johor Bahru.

 

She was accompanied by her sister, two children and her maid.

 

A few kilometres from the Immigration Checkpoint at Woodlands, she stopped at a petrol station to top up her tank.

 

She then decided to buy fruits, and left the four other passengers in her locked car.

 

That's when two men armed with guns and knives demanded they open the door.

 

Rita's sister, Ms Rita Zuhaida, said: "My first reaction was, 'Okay, I can drive off'. But then I saw the gun... I didn't think it was worth it. I followed whatever they wanted."

 

Once the kidnappers gained access to the car, they sped off.

 

Seeing her car missing, Rita called her sister but the phone call was answered by one of the kidnappers.

 

"He said, 'I've got your children, I've got your sister. I've got your maid. We want money. If you inform the police, we will kill all of them.'," said Rita.

 

The next four hours saw Rita in intense negotiations with the kidnappers to get her family back.

 

At the same time, she was also in contact with Malaysian and Singapore authorities.

 

During this time, the kidnappers had taken all the belongings of the hostages and were driving around.

 

But their nightmare came to an end when the kidnappers decided to release the family by the roadside.

 

They drove off with the car and all the valuables inside - a total of about S$80,000.

 

With help from villagers, they were brought back to the police station, where Rita was reunited with them.

 

When contacted, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said all the Singaporeans involved in the incident were released unharmed and returned safely to Singapore on Sunday morning.

 

A spokesperson added: "The consulate in JB was in contact with Ms Rita and rendered consular assistance to her and her family members."

 

For Rita, she's hoping that more can be done to step up the vigilance in Johor Bahru, so a situation like this will not happen again.

A Singaporean man died on the spot after being shot four times at close range at a condominium in Johor Baru.

 

The incident happened at around 10pm on 25 June at the outdoor carpark of block E, Taman Desa Tebrau. The condo is located along Jalan Harmonium near Johor

A security guard survived being shot five times during a RM100,000 heist near a money-changer's outlet here.

 

The drama unfolded when the guard, R. Paul, 50, was accompanying his money-changer employer out of the Holiday Plaza shopping mall towards the main road where their car was parked at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

 

Paul said he noticed three men wearing ski masks walking towards them, adding that one was armed with a pistol.

China Press reported that a 13-year-old boy and his friends allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl after getting her drunk during a picnic outing.

 

They also filmed the attack and uploaded the footage online.

 

The incident happened in Kuching last Monday morning.

 

The boy had invited the girl for a picnic and drinking session. He also invited two other friends, both aged 17.

 

After getting her drunk, the teenagers brought her to a nearby jungle and took turns to rape her.

 

They sent her home in the afternoon after she was awake and threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident.

 

It was learnt that the girl was the girlfriend of one of the teenagers.

 

The girl, who kept mum on the matter, however decided to alert her parents, who lodged a police report on Friday, after learning that the recording of the rape had gone viral on the Internet.

 

All three teenagers have been remanded by the police to facilitate investigations.

Over 400K stolen from ATMs

Kuala Lumpur - The Oxy gang has struck again, this time carting away over a million ringgit cash by breaking into four ATMs at a hypermarket.

 

The incident is believed to have occurred between midnight and 7am at Carrefour Hypermarket in Wangsa Maju yesterday.

 

The thieves accessed the hypermarket by drilling a hole from the basement car park.

 

Sentul deputy OCPD Supt Othman Abu Bakar said the thieves used a blowtorch to open four out of six ATMS located on the ground floor of the hypermarket.

 

The thieves then escaped with RM1.17mil through the hole.

 

Supt Othman said a security guard on his rounds spotted the hole at 7am. Further checks revealed that the CCTVs had been tampered with.

 

The Oxy gang got its name because of the modus operandi of using oxy-fuel (commonly called oxyacetylene or oxy welding torches), which uses fuel gases and oxygen, to cut through the ATMs.

 

Security guard Marsued Martaib, 55, did not suspect anything amiss when he reported for work at 7am.

 

"I only realised what had happened two hours later when a few policemen asked where the ATMs were located," he said at the scene.

 

It is also learnt that the hypermarket, which closes at midnight, has been in business for more than 15 years and this was the first time such an incident has happened.

 

On June 22, thieves broke open an ATM at a hypermarket in Taman Permata and got away with more than RM80,000 (S$32,752).

 

On June 14, four robbers took less than three minutes to cart away an ATM containing RM47,900 from the Subang Jaya KTM commuter station.

 

On June 1, thieves carted away an ATM machine, which contained RM37

Handcuffed and dressed in an orange prison uniform, the pale-looking woman bowed thrice before the coffin.

 

She then walked around it and returned to bow another three times.

 

Then she sobbed.

 

The occasion was the wake of her boyfriend Mr Koh Teck Huat, which was held in Johor Baru on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The 40-year-old Singaporean was shot dead at the carpark of the Taman Desa Tebrau condominium at Jalan Harmonium in Johor Baru, located next to the Aeon Tebrau City shopping mall on Monday night.

 

His girlfriend, who is in her 20s, was detained by Malaysian police on Monday night. Officers had reportedly found various types of pills and packed substances, believed to be drugs, in the condo unit she shared with Mr Koh.

 

The New Paper had reported that Mr Koh was walking towards the lift lobby of his condominium when he was fatally shot at 9.45pm on Monday.

 

The assailant fired multiple gunshots at him from the driver's side of a black multi-purpose vehicle, which then sped off, a security guard at the condo told TNP.

 

The security guard then led the police officers to the unit where Mr Koh lived on the fourth storey at around midnight.

 

The girlfriend was shocked to see police at her door and broke down uncontrollably when the police told her how he was shot dead downstairs.

 

On Wednesday, Mr Koh's girlfriend paid her last respects at a mourning hall in Johor Baru, Shin Min Daily News reported.

 

After spending two days in a police lock-up, the unnamed woman, who was accompanied by more than 10 Malaysian police officers, had asked for permission to attend Mr Koh's wake, the paper reported.

 

She walked to his coffin, her body shaking as she cried, then walked back to the front of the mourning hall and bowed.

 

The entire visit lasted 10 minutes.

If the news are reported in the mainstream media and TS is merely requoting the news, I don't think this is creating fear and he could be charged.

Just trying to create awareness. We Singaporeans been living in a safe haven since birth, such crime scenes are rare here but not only common in Malaysia, so are many other parts of the world incuding US, UK and Europe. We've been taking our safety for granted for most our lives till we venture overseas (holidays, overseas studies, work trips, malaysia).

 

One very good example of Singaporeans with daft mentality : Students putting their bags unattended while ordering McDonalds. Already shows how complacent we are since young, go overseas sure tio chop!!!
