Windwaver Turbocharged June 24, 2012 Share June 24, 2012 Recently went for servicing; changed engine oil, oil filter and alternator. Funny thing is after driving for about 10 mins onwards, I will hear a squeaking sound from the steering wheel when I turn in either clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation. This is abnormal because it was OK before the servicing. The squeaking sound is like rubber rubbing against each other due to friction but I cannot be sure. My dad is saying the mechanic might have over tightened something. Anybody here has experience with this problem? ↡ Advertisement

5936 1st Gear June 24, 2012 Share June 24, 2012 Could be same belt driving Alternator and PS pump. Check the belt tension, if its correct.

Windwaver Turbocharged June 24, 2012 Author Share June 24, 2012 I see, so belt tension will produce this type of sound after awhile of driving? To make myself clearer; This same belt connects the alternator and pump and driving wheel? So this means it's too tight right?
5936 1st Gear June 24, 2012 Share June 24, 2012 (edited) Old and new rotating parts are very chance for the noise. Usually, adjustment of the parts that were reassembled will resolve the problem Go back to the workshop to have it checked, they will usually help out, if they want to retain you as their customer My take is that belt bit loose. Windwaver Turbocharged June 25, 2012 Author Share June 25, 2012 Cold condition tension -barely OK. Warmed up belt expand. Was busy for the whole day :(. What you said make sense. In other words, once the belt warmed up, it expands and cause the squeaking sound. So tension of belt needs to be tightened?

Windwaver Turbocharged June 30, 2012 Author Share June 30, 2012 Went back to the workshop but mechanic says probably not due to the belt because the sound is coming from the steering wheel. Is there a way to open the steering wheel to oil it?

I had similar experience, but the noise is only audible when turning at very low speed, like u-turning. In my case, it was due to defective spiral cable insulator. At least this was what the mechanic had said. Before replacing this, snap ring and steering coupling were replaced but the rubbing noise persist. ↡ Advertisement
