Okay folks i am oldschool. I need a radio and cd system with amps and speakers. Entry level audiophile standard to put in home living room. Listen mainly to symphony orchestra.

Thinking of this bose wave system, but i believe sure overpriced. But i suppose bose sound should be above average, dollar for dollar.

A person who like/love symphony music,1k is not enough....you need at least $5-6k to get a decent system,1k only can either get 2nd hand or those mini Hi-Fi from Sim Lim Tower.

I believe Yamaha, Denon has the complete mini compo units that is very suitable for causal listening.

Perhaps around 20watts RMS per channel.

Easily get at Best or Courts.

Of course if want the loud cymbals clash and bassoon bass, then these mini compo not enough.

Those kimd of sound quality surely need 100watts RMS per channel and for the subwoofer 500watt RMS at least.

I had a Bose Wave radio-only unit. The sound was very bassy without going toward causing resonance vibration. For a small unit it was surprisingly good.

I know what audiophiles say about Bose but my non-audiophile ears liked it.

I have 2 "systems" and my ears are just average and I am not that picky as long as I can hear the various background instruments when I play jazz cds.

A Bose 321 but that is 2x your $1k budget. They always tout their small footprint but take note the woofer is of normal size.

For $1k, I got myself a Yamaha amp (+ radio function) and 2 book shelf speakers. Also inherited a 20 yo Teac CD player which still functions wonderfully. The sound to me is no less worse off than the Bose. Actually, I like this sound than the Bose but it could be a placement issue. But note that this might take up more space than a Bose.

That was 6 years ago.

If you are not hung up about branding, separates might cost you within the $1k range.

thanks guys for all your response. i also know to get a good system is 5-6k or maybe more. but i guess what i am seeking opinion is within 1k, what is the best system i can buy.

just like i also can afford to buy a brand new merc (and get burdened by instalment), but decide to get a brand new hyundai (and sleep well at night). it's just what is the maximum you are willing to pay, and what is the best car you can get within that budget.

Hi. 1K a bit difficult to get a system. But if you don't mind seperate components, you can get a normal 2nd hand CD player like Denon's which should be quite cheap, and couple it with a Creative sound system. Their high end sys e.g. ZiiSound T6 has wireless speakers so you can position them to your liking without troublesome wiring. Somehow I feel the positioning of the speakers makes a huge difference in sound quality. They may look like toys but for your budget they are pretty good. They are about $570 so you should have some spare cash for a good 2nd hand amp.

As I don't know how sensitive your ears are to audio quality I suggest you drop by Creative's showroom at either Marina Sq or their HQ at IBP for a demo. Give them a call first so they can set up the system you want to try with. Bring your own CDs so you will know the diff.

Happy searching!

$1k is very little if you must buy Bose or an integrated system in general, but plenty if you are willing to buy separates. I would suggest you go browsing at the Adelphi. I bought my speakers at KEC, and they gave me good advice in general and my budget was around $1k too. Just tell them your budget, let them set up the stuff and play something you like and see if you like the sound. That said, I lugged the stuff home myself and did my own wiring, so I dont know how much that will cost if you want someone to do it for you.

If you want something really simple, I would suggest a high end Yamaha soundbar... surround sound without the wiring hassle...provided the room is small enough.

You will be hard pressed to find anybody who has put in effort to compare the various brands and still prefer Bose.

Bose is like LCD tvs compared to Plasmas - LCDs look spectacular in the showroom, but you will start to notice the unnatural stuff done to enhance the image after lengthy viewing, and it is uncomfortable. Plasmas in contrast, looks plain in the showroom, but you will start to appreciate how natural it is at home.

Similarly for Bose, it will sound spectacular in the showroom, but it will sound unnatural and piercing after a while. But you have to compare the same source material to figure this out, so dont compare if you already own one.

At the budget of $1k, a lot of system seriously lack in bass. I used to own a Yamaha Micro system. It is good enough for a while. After that, i have to buy a sub.

Anyway, a good enough Bose system will definitely starts from $2k.

http://sg.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-vis...__g/?mode=model

comes with 60 or 65W which is quite decent bah. price is $1249 which is okay to me (slightly above 1k no prob to me). incidentally i think KEC is a yamaha dealer, so would be good to pop by
