Channel 5, Channel 8, Suria and Vasantham will be transmitted in HD by then, while the remaining three (Channel NewsAsia, Okto and Channel U) will be in HD by 2016. The move marks another milestone in Singapore's roadmap in making the digital switchover, where analogue signals will be completely switched off by 2020. To enjoy digital TV, the Media Development Authority said no action is required from those who currently subscribe to pay-TV with StarHub or SingTel, as they already receive the channels digitally. Those without pay-TV can continue using their current TV sets but they will need to purchase an antenna and a DVB-T2 digital receiver. However there is no need to rush for the receivers now, as they are likely to be made available in Singapore only from March or April 2013. To reap the full benefits of digital TV and the high definition channels that will be transmitted, viewers may want to opt for a new digital HDTV set. MDA said even when the free-to-air channels are transmitted digitally at the end of 2013, analogue transmissions will continue. The simulcast period is to give ample time for viewers to make the necessary adjustments to embrace digital TV. MDA said it will be working closely with MediaCorp, major manufacturers and electronics stores on an educational campaign to help consumers prepare for the digital switchover. Among those who do, many have secondary TV sets that are not linked to a pay-TV service. For these two groups, they will need to purchase a DVB-T2 receiver and an antenna, and hook these to each of their current TV sets. So how will those who do not subscribe to pay-TV receive the digital signal? Buy DVB-T2 receiver and an antenna, and receive OVER-THE-AIR? So in a HDB block, 40% of households will have an antenna sticking out of their windows? In the old days, HDB provide an antenna point to your unit. So in a HDB block, 40% of households will have an antenna sticking out of their windows? In the old days, HDB provide an antenna to your unit. Now, it is "outsourced" to SH, which is a for-profit entity that sells pay-TV - conflict of interest. Most likely just need to buy a settop box. The transmission will still be the same usual terrestrial transmission at VHF or UHF, so the existing TV antenna will work. What is difference the encoding of the TV program is digitalized instead of analog. In layman term, it's similar to how AM is changed to FM. Those who stay in HDB and watch via cable has always been watching in digital transmission anyway, so no difference. The difference only for those watching purely from antenna. What's the advantage? Especially for those who die die never subscribe to starhub or mio, will have to depends on the HDB antenna? Does thsi mean All TV programme will be in HD clarity? Meaning TCS will be filming serials in HD format clarity? Meaning all commercials will also be in true HD format? Heavy investment in HD camera. What it means is by 2013, coaxial cable connect directly from HDB cable outlet to TV will not work anymore unless it has DVB-T tuner capability(which possibly will not work if they decide to change format or add encryption). So, when that happens, all household will need a box that accept a cable from the HDB cable and output a HDMI or Component output which can be connected to TV. Digitizing is not to be confused with HD. There are just too many old video content that is in SD, so, only past few years to current/future programs will be made in HD, so expect to see a lot of old programs still in SD.
