Unemployment rate for over-30s creeps up

I believe finding job really depends a lot on luck.

Yes! I can personally attest to it.

I started looking for opportunities (although not fervorously) since 2010.

Went for a couple of interviews, all came to naught.

Earlier this year, I was pressured by the company due to poor business result and I was desperate to get out.

An opportunity from a new company came by, via an ex-colleague:

Went for an initial meet-up, then a follow-up interview.

And the job offer was made via WhatsApp!

Left my ex-company after working 11 years.

Such is life.

You are consider lucky. Many times luck and opportunity play an important role in finding job. If the time is right, you can find a better job than your current one.

People networking is the most effective way to find good jobs these days.  The positive reviews about you from your network already gave you one-up vs other job seekers.  It's also easier to pre-check the background of the new job instead of getting into unknown shit or smoked by HR.

I wouldnt say they dont perform, more like they just do the minimum and within their scope of work.

Nothing wrong with such people what.

Like you said, they do their work.

See, there is still a time limit. what if 5 yrs, 10 yrs same pay?

Not true. Personally I'm happy with my pay. If I can lock in my job for next 3 years on same pay, I'll happily take the security of this contract rather than have a token 1% to 3% annual wage adjustment.

That's why you must learn to job hop.

Job hopping used to have a bad reputation.

But now it's a survival technique.

If you see your current company not doing well, plan to job hop soon.

Yes, I became complacent after working there for so long:

it was the longest time I've ever worked in the same company.

I am very fortunate to be still able to get out in my mid-40's.

I have a friend who left his last job voluntarily in May 2012 and is still sitting at home after more than four years.

Wont be same pay for the 5-10 years period, but pay increased very slow and little. Maybe every year pay increment less than $100 only?!

Sit at home for 4 years? You friend must be very cash rich, can no need to work and no worry for money for 4 years?!

Always good to have a network of friends and colleagues ...

You help them and you never know when you need help too ...

You never know ... it may be coming soon :)

And too add. It helps to maintain a good reputation after you tender resignation. Too many people start to throw pattern and mc during their notice period.

This will affect the employee in the future should a future employer call up the ex manager for his opinion. Cos you never know.

As you grow older and have a broader network of friends and connections, it is easier to find a job based on connections and luck. Similarly, it also means that any future employer is likely to know at least one of your ex managers because while you were expanding your network of friends, your future employer and ex managers are too.

I did get my current job due to connections but it was also because I did not leave a bad reputation when I left my previous jobs that I could also be considered for the job.

I thought your job is the most in demand in Singapore?

There is a big shortage of nurses right?

I heard they even had to get from Myanmar or Vietnam of somewhere.
