A Porsche for a Chery

By Joyce Hooi

One man's Chery QQ is another man's Porsche Boxster Black Edition - if the Porsche man were shopping for a car in the United States, that is.

Soaring Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums and a robust Singapore dollar have made the cheapest passenger car here - the manual Chery QQ 0.8 - the equivalent of most European luxury badges elsewhere.

Even at a promotional net price of S$74,988, the Chery QQ gets you the Porsche Boxster Black Edition at US$55,200 (S$71,450)

Song Boh?

Truely rich QQ owners should feel proud when an American tourist asked what car he drives in Singapore!

it's ok. Singaporeans can afford it. 1 in 6 is a millionaire.

Anyway, no use to compare car prices in singapore to any other country. Will only cause one to cough out blood. Just accept the fact that we have to shell out $100+K for B&B and 200+K for continental.

In short, the COE system make sillyporean look stupid! [thumbsdown]

Ppl from other countries will think we are stupid, but for those who chase after COE will think they are steady, rich, can afford, proud owner.

As a rough guide, the OMV of the cars here should be the estimated retail price of the same car sold in the States, maybe lower due to the economies of scale. Hence, a C class can be had for S$40k, Camry for S$25k, 523 for S$45k, etc.

Housing is even more attractive, a 2,000sf FH landed can be had for USD200-300k at some cities. It is the price we pay to live in a "GLOBAL City"!
