SINGAPORE - The number of workers laid off last year rose for the fourth consecutive year, said the Manpower Ministry (MOM) in a report released on Thursday.
A total of 12,930 people lost their jobs in 2014, up from 11,560 in 2013.
Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents made up a smaller share of the layoffs last year at 56 per cent, compared with 65 per cent in 2013, and this was lower than their two-thirds respresentation in the total workforce, excluding maids.
MOM found that the majority of the affected workers were from the services sector, which had employed 56.2 per cent of those who were asked to go. Companies in the sector listed business restructuring for greater work efficiency as the top reason for redundancy last year.
Professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) were once again most vulnerable to layoffs, a trend that has continued since 2012. But their share of the overall pool of workers made redundant last year fell off slightly at just over half, or 50.5 per cent, down from a peak of 55.6 per cent in 2013.
PMETs made up 53.1 per cent of resident employees in 2014. PMETs who were laid off in the first three quarters of the year were less likely to be in work by December, compared with other occupational groups. But across the board, the rate of re-entry into employment rose, leading the overall rate to climb to 67.7 per cent last year, up from 65.9 per cent in 2013.

Now my head spins. Are these the same mfs who dish out stats that say there will be 4.5% wage increment AGAIN in the other tread on wage increment?

oh wait, the shitty times stats prob dont take account of the retrenchment figures because people who lost their jobs DONT HAVE ANY WAGE OR INCOME and are excluded from their "4.5% wage increment" stats?????

waaaa we r really moving....from 1st words reporting...to 3rd world living standard.

Not just malls. Kopi shops and hawker centers. I think a recent ch8 tv program highlighted the issue. A lot of empty stalls island wide. All becos no cheap foreign labour available.

Which brings back the fundamental problem, we STOPPED PRODUCTIVITY and choose CHEAP ALTERNATIVE. Now to hire back Mr Productivity Bee will take 10 years to see results...

I anticipate the leaders will "prata" back to "import", waiting for Mr Bee to produce "honey(GDP)" is too SLOW for them...

After this report being published, the next question will be:

what will the garmen do to make these ppl survive? given that half of them are PMET, will the garmen help to source for new jobs for them, as most of them would likely be middle-aged, and may be hard to find jobs in the open market...

Hmm... looks like unemployment trend is increasing....

Is it due to nature of work restructuring here? Or is it due to influx of FTs?

No matter what, hope our local citizens are able to find job soon to survive in this harsh high cost living here...
