Jeroming Neutral Newbie May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 It's peak hour traffic. The expressways are jam packed with cars and heavy vehicles, as well as motorcycles splitting lanes. Filtering lanes become almost like playing Super Mario, jumping from one platform to another while dodging fireballs in between. You manage to filter from lane 3 to lane 1 in such conditions. What goes through your mind when this happens? (1) Phew. Lucky sia! Managed to get to Lane 1 fast today. (2) I've got skillz! (3) Thanks yo. To the drivers who let me cut in. Jeroming Neutral Newbie May 25, 2012 Author Share May 25, 2012 the reason why i started this... i consider myself quite a new driver, having only recently removed my P plate. a lot of times i find that drivers tend to slot themselves in callously. it almost feel like they take for granted that they have right to the space at the lane they are entering. when i first started driving, i try as best as possible to show my appreciation with the lifted hand in the rear mirror whenever i am allowed to cut in. slowly this faded away when i noticed no one else actually does it, and i am also gradually becoming jaded. day in day out, in peak hr traffic, this scene repeats itself. i think we all drivers belong to a community, and we gotta work together and cooperate to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow. once a while we speed and toe with the laws, i guess that's fine. but during dangerous times like peak hours, jams from accidents/breakdowns, heavy rain, slippery roads, we gotta work together. sorry to be sermonising so early in the morning but i just wanted to let this off my chest, from the perspective of a relatively new driver. and i certainly hope not to pick up other bad habits like not signalling my intent to filter/turn or high-beaming any-o-how just to get a right of way. Nonewid Neutral Newbie May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 Yes, I agree.. I also rather new (still P plate). I'm still very diligently signaling when i intend to change lane, raise hand to show thanks etc.. and actually i still see many bros doing so, which i personally will also appreciate when i slow down to allow them to cut in. So let's keep it up and make driving in Sg pleasant! the reason why i started this... i consider myself quite a new driver, having only recently removed my P plate. a lot of times i find that drivers tend to slot themselves in callously. it almost feel like they take for granted that they have right to the space at the lane they are entering. when i first started driving, i try as best as possible to show my appreciation with the lifted hand in the rear mirror whenever i am allowed to cut in. slowly this faded away when i noticed no one else actually does it, and i am also gradually becoming jaded. day in day out, in peak hr traffic, this scene repeats itself. i think we all drivers belong to a community, and we gotta work together and cooperate to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow. once a while we speed and toe with the laws, i guess that's fine. but during dangerous times like peak hours, jams from accidents/breakdowns, heavy rain, slippery roads, we gotta work together. sorry to be sermonising so early in the morning but i just wanted to let this off my chest, from the perspective of a relatively new driver. and i certainly hope not to pick up other bad habits like not signalling my intent to filter/turn or high-beaming any-o-how just to get a right of way. ins1dious Turbocharged May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 (edited) Is it just me or do others avoid driving during rush hours? I stay back at work or a friends house if I can't leave work at Anson Road by 1730. Cos later than that, ECP towards Changi is crazy till 2000. I'd rather get some work done or grab a bite with mates than be stuck in traffic for 30 mins. After that rush hour, it only takes me 10 mins to get home to Katong. Much better, can stretch the Q's legs that way. Edited May 25, 2012 by Habeebhashim
Steptronic Supercharged May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 To me, it is typical Singaporean mentality trying to reach lane 1 always irrespective the road situation. This practice should be discontinued. If lane 3 is free (which is the case most of the times), continue to drive in that. If it is not, move on to lane 2 and continue to drive. What is there in lane 1?? Hamburger Hypersonic May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 I still raise my hand as a gesture of saying thanks. it don't bother me whether others do it or not. most important thing is I like to let the one behind me knows that I appreciate.

Not Saying thanks to courtesy given is rude for me. Cultivating good habits on the road will result in good driver mentality, which may ultimately save life. Just because others are rude doesn't mean you have to become one as well right? Safe driving!

Steptronic Supercharged May 25, 2012 Share May 25, 2012 Lane 1 is where all the actions are? Ever come across a driver entering expressway tried so hard filtering to lane 1 only to filter back out to the next exit? Yesterday I witnessed an accident on BKE. I was on Lane 2. The car on lane 1 had to exit. This syupid guy put the signal and I slowed down. He managed to come in front of me and significantly slowed down to go to lane 3. He some how managed to do that also. But the anti-climax was in filtering lane. He wanted to squeeze in there too, but unfortunately the cars in front of him braked (I guess another stupid guy should have cut in closely about 4-5 cars before). This guy banked the car in front! Why this stunt?. These people want to stay in lane 1 as much as possible and then start the stunt of changing all lanes at once

Here's my 2 cents worth: 1) Despite many who may not practise good and safe driving, let's not be discouraged to be a safe, considerate and courteous driver 2) Regardless road, weather and traffic conditions; motorists should always exercise safe, considerate and defensive driving I believe it all begins with ME and therefore, I will not use the excuse of bad motorists to be another on the road. While we may not be perfect motorists, we should continue to practise safe, considerate and defensive driving to encourage others to do so despite the woes of driving on our roads today. Have a nice day and drive safe!

Yes. I hate it extremely when I give way to people when I don't have to and they don't bother to say thanks. Sometimes, I give way to vehicles stuck behind a hogging lorry in the middle lane, then in the end, that vehicle travel slower than the lorry itself. Also, pedestrians who don't wave thanks when you let them cross the road illegally and stare at you macam you HAVE TO stop like that...
Jeroming Neutral Newbie May 25, 2012 Author Share May 25, 2012 it is certainly heartening to know that most motorists here in MCF are generally reasonable. i certainly hope courtesy during driving will become the norm rather than the exception. i would love to continue my gesture of appreciation, and i still do sometimes but i admit that this is getting less frequent because people do not reciprocate. regardless i will continue to do what is right. hopefully new motorists entering the community will continue the "good habits" taught in driving schools and not pick up bad ones by learning from nasty drivers out there. ↡ Advertisement
