Acemundo Supercharged May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 Rent seeking has a layman meaning of landlords collecting rental income from land and the other economics theory of rent-seeking which may include but is not limited by the above meaning. This rent seeking behavoiur in SG is a very valid point. For example, phenomenon of rent seeking in monopolies. Hopefully more people like Ngaim would (dare to) bring this up to public attention. this has been long a culture in singapore. making money at the expense of its own people. whereas JTC in early years endeavored to provide cheap rented factories, recent years has seen to Mapletree forming reits to collect market rate rents. not forgetting the justification for privatising public transport, power and utilities has thus far only seen oligopolistic or monopolies collecting fat income from locals and companies operating in singapore. ↡ Advertisement
Unidentified 1st Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 It's sad that retired top civil servant Mr.Ngiam Tong Dow is not our Country Leader, he speaks differently with those "toe the party line" existing Mp's & Minister's in Parliament House. Mr.Ngiam Tong How previous speech in "Auto Pilot System" had deeply impressed me, and now with his "Wealth Creator" message does carries the values and the fault line in our country progresses. Imagine our nearest neighbours are manufacturing "National Cars" to exporting around the world, we Singapore exporting our uesd cars due to the miserable constraints in "Low Resale Value With 10 Years Car Life-Span", it is absolutely wastage of our country and peoples resources, foreign countries used cars importer are blessed with these lucrative used car business developments. To me, some well addressed Policies are just "Revenues Generating In Disguise", many years has gone by with it's implementation and we're yet to see these Policies effectively resolving the addressed problems. so ERP and bus lane are actually one of the "revenues generating in disguise"? *LIKE*
Kiadaw 6th Gear May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 No product (no necessarily physical sense), than there is no need for wealth management. Both must work together, but we (as in the world) need more wealth creators than wealth managers. Almost all (if not all) major economies are build on industrialization, some sort of wealth creator of some sort, then wealth management. Wealth creator doesn't mean hot sun, heavy machinery. Music & entertainment, software & apps, even F&B (the only industry in Singapore I think we are world class), science & technology. As a climate hot zone, its a good place for scientist to set up base to study effect of climate change in equator region for instant, or study solar energy for instant, as we got so bloody much sun. In fact some may regards wealth management like banks & financial institute as by product of wealth creators. But some small country does do well with wealth management as main source, maybe Switzerland, but even Switzerland have many wealth creators like their ski resorts (which are bloody expensive), tourism, & their chocolate & watch industry. We had done well as a wealth manager, we have done well, but we may in future face problem with other rising location like Shanghai for instance, which are more strategically located. But technical fields are not easy, as we cannot compete with say China for price, as we are much too expensive, even with regional FTs. If we wanted to compete, we need to go a little more high end areas, which brings to another problem, which is lack of geniue people with the skills, qualification, as many bright people do not like to take engineering or science, the exact fields we need the brightest people. In other countries, if you one of the brightest people, you have to work in top research, scientific & engineering firms, everyone, or start your own company in the fields, like Gates & Steve Job did. In Singapore, its all about $$$. But this is an East Asian mindset that is hard to change.
