"Riding the YikeBike in Singapore

The YikeBike is a new phenomenon with such unique design specifications that it does not fit squarely into any of Singapore's current vehicular categories. It has been brought to the attention of the LTA and is currently under evaluation. As such it currently does NOT require registration, licensing nor insurance. It does NOT have LTA approval for use on public roads. Its lightweight design and limited top speed was designed for it to be used similarly to a bicycle with appropriate safety gear. We recommend that it be ridden responsibly and safely on pedestrian pathways, private areas, park connectors, recreational areas away from fast moving vehicular traffic..."

Ha ... so is cycling on pavements but that hasn't stopped you ... :D

David just needs to qualify his statements la, illegal is sg has quite different meaning from illegal on public roads and pedestrian walkways... [laugh]

E.g for Segway the Lta reply is

We would like to inform you that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) regulates vehicles that can be used on public roads. The Segway Human Transporter is not designed for and hence not suitable for use on public roads where there would be interactions with motor vehicles. Given its design and construction, the Segway Human Transporter cannot meet our technical requirements and be registered for use on public roads. Under the Road Traffic Rules, motorised vehicles such as the Segway human transporter are not allowed on pedestrian walksways.

If you intend to use the Segway on private grounds and non-public roads (i.e. recreational/private compounds, factory ground, airport terminals, etc), permission should be obtained from the authorities/owners governing such places.

Otherwise we wouldn't have it at the airport and sentosa.... [laugh]

Normal looking e-bicycle no need to pay tax & legal le.

Those e bicycle need to pay money to get the approval seal from LTA.

It's a small tax.
