Ladykillerz 4th Gear May 14, 2012 Share May 14, 2012 good information! best of all, the higher management rather put the profits into their pockets than inserting airbags for taxis. ↡ Advertisement
Jim 1st Gear May 14, 2012 Share May 14, 2012 (edited) What do motorcyclists, The Stig and Sebastian Vettel have in common? The helmet. I recall one VW Touran advert featuring a whole family dressed up like The Stig. Beyond the seat belt, I think the next bang for buck, good for all scenario safety feature in cars ought to be the helmet, not air bags. But good luck getting people to wear a helmet in car. So, I wouldnt fault taxi companies for stripping out the air bags. If you are really concerned about cabby safety, lobby for helmets, not air bags. Soran 1st Gear May 14, 2012 Share May 14, 2012 Honestly speaking, airbags will not have done much in this instance with such high impact speed. This is why some high-performance cars like the TVR Tuscan dont even come with them. One of the designers was quoted at saying that if u crash at 200km/h+, no amount of airbags will save ur sorry ass anyway....

Although airbags are important but the primary safety factors are still the seat belts followed by car body infrastructure. The severity of the impact also varies from, how does the impact hits onto which part of the car, the motion of the car moves after the impact and what did the car hits onto after the first impact, etc. Too many factors to consider. Even if it is a Ncap 5 star ratings car, it doesn't mean that the driver will definitely be safe from death. I reckon this Hyundai Sonata's car body is already tough enough. I'm quite doubtful that even with the airbags, the driver will survive. In short, the impact is too big. [R.I.P to the taxi driver]

Wubb Clutched May 14, 2012 Share May 14, 2012 (edited) there are only 2 that came full spec with airbags and leather seats, SHA6006 and SHA6009. they are initially used as trials. after the trials ended comfort decide to purchase cheapo stripped down versions without airbags and with black interior Edited May 14, 2012 by Wubb
SimonTan 2nd Gear May 14, 2012 Author Share May 14, 2012 If the two taxi news is true. And the damaged taxis indeed basic and lack of air bags, etc. Then I guess, the Farrari ins can argue for a lesser blame of the death?

13177 Hypersonic May 15, 2012 Share May 15, 2012 Thought most cars should comes with airbags at least at the front?! Side airbags depends on the car design. But sometimes also must see how serious the accident will be, if too serious, even airbags also no use.
SimonTan 2nd Gear May 15, 2012 Author Share May 15, 2012 It's true airbags may not have saved him, just like the frontal impact on the red car where the airbag obviously did not help the driver. But we can say the airbags did saved the red car passenger?

Passion 5th Gear May 15, 2012 Share May 15, 2012 Even head didn't hit the A pillar or windows, with the impact, the neck would have broken. Sonata taxi doesn't come with airbag. If I didn't remember wrongly, Superb, Camry, Touran and Merc have airbag only. Not sure about Epica, never took one before.
