Giggsy3 Clutched May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 Suddenly thought of this old question: Heard about running in means speed not more than 80km/hr, also heard about means rev not more than 3000rpm. Which is correct? Or there are other methods? ↡ Advertisement
Ivanpaseo 2nd Gear May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm The correct method is full load the engine! when rpm low than on high gear pedal to metal to 100% load the engine
Vega Turbocharged May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 Modern engines are already factory run in. Just make sure your new brakes n tires are run in properly.
Nonetheless Clutched May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 it depends on the car itself or should i say brand... when i got hold of my current ride, F10, the user menu stated that run in period is 2Kkm... recommended not over 4000rpm or so and be gentle to the brakes for the first 500km for the brake and tire to run in too... i may be wrong about that... but that's what is stated in my user menu... you should check urs too...... my previous ride camry 2.4, run in period is first 1kkm

Which is correct? Or there are other methods? You may drive at speeds above 80km/h. Just keep on varying the speeds so the load is varying all the time to help the running in process. It is better to drive say 80 to 100 for 15-25 minutes, then move it up to 100-110 for the next 15-25 minutes then tone down to 80-100 again. Then change the Engine oil at 800kms. After the first oil change you can press harder and change your oil again at 5000kms. It should run just fine after that.
Mllcg 3rd Gear May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 if engine already factory run in, how come manual still say must run in first 5k?
ER-3682 Twincharged May 8, 2012 Share May 8, 2012 Just drive normally, but avoid full throttle, but if there is a need[beat red light or need urgent overtaking],just do it,should not harm the engine.
Blackyv Turbocharged May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 Im a non believer of run in. I drove my previous vios back to Kl when odo read 700+ only and I whack all the way, 160kmh+, when im back for my 1k service odo already 17++km and car was zero problem for 3yrs until I sold it off.. Same goes for my current latio, drive like I will drive every single day since day1 and 5 yrs + zero problem to engine or gear box so far... Im a heavy right foot guy, almost everyday I will drive hit 5krpm+ on many occasion... So, if you ask me, forget about run in, just drive the way you like... Steptronic Supercharged May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 (edited) Suddenly thought of this old question: Heard about running in means speed not more than 80km/hr, also heard about means rev not more than 3000rpm. Which is correct? Or there are other methods? What is your car? Please go through your manual for any specific points. Generally, what I can summarise based on my previous and current cars is: 1. The run in time for most of the cars is 1K. Best is to make sure that you run-in till recommended first service. 2. Speed (km/hr) is not an issue. But driving at constant speed is to be avoided 3. Keeping within 2.5k RPM during run-in is recommended 4. Avoid hard brakes during run-in If you follow the above, it is believed that engines would have long life! Vega Turbocharged May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 even supercars like lambo are wacked before handling over to customers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endsc...p;v=WKkaMGnxlwY
Aaronlkl Supersonic May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 Run-in your new car as recommended by manufacturers. Failure to comply may result in premature engine wear (comsumption of engine oil etc). New cars had been factory run-in is a myth. You had been warned!
Aaronlkl Supersonic May 9, 2012 Share May 9, 2012 if engine already factory run in, how come manual still say must run in first 5k? I dare say all new cars are not run-in. They do test drive the new car (on dyno and on road) after assembly to ensure there are no fault b4 handling over to customers. Just to share my experience, some of my friends who don't run-in their engine had excessive engine oil consumption after just a few yr!
