Singapore inflation worrying: ING Bank economist

By Aaron Low

Growth in Asian economies should pick up in the second half of the year, as Europe puts the worst behind it, said a senior economist at Dutch ING Bank.

Singapore should see growth pick up and end the year with a respectable 2.7 per cent expansion, at the higher end of the official 1 to 3 per cent forecast range, said the bank's chief economist for Asia, Mr Tim Condon.

But he warned that inflation in Singapore may accelerate even faster if it is not capped at a reasonable rate.

Highlighting inflation as a key worry for Singapore, after the rise in the consumer price index hit 5.2 per cent in March, he worries that the persistently high inflation rate could alter people's expectations of inflation and disrupt price stability. This could have the effect of pushing inflation much higher than usual, he said.

everyone believe they can, everyone will be billionaires. [laugh]

we don't want to compare countries with lower taste, we should compare with countries which are better than us in order for us to improve and move forward in a positive manner. agree?

even if we are smart, we aren't certain that our kids will also be as smart as us. what we can do is to try our best and to provide whatever we can for them. the quote "We believe" doesn't exist in dictionary and will not make any change if we believe. [laugh]

my exact sentiments. this is how I always feel as well whenever pro pap supporters say the usual things like "be grateful with what you have, look at living standards and conditions of people in nearby countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and etc etc". I mean, for heaven sake, we are already passed that phase. instead of comparing ourselves to countries like Switerland, Japan, UK and etc etc, this very group of people still want to use countries like Indonesia as examples to gauge the performance of our leaders.

Its like, if your kids consistently score 80 out of 100 in their work and one day consistently slipped to just 70 out of 100, shouldn't you use the yardstick of 80 out of 100 and above to judge if he/she did well? Does it make logical sense to still compare with other kids who usually flunk their papers and are thought to have done ok if they can score 55 out of 100? Aka "oh my son although grades deproved but have scored consistently higher than other children I know who is always getting 50-55 out of 100, and so I think its ok". Who would actually think that way??

The group of people who always tells me to be grateful and use indonesia and philippines as examples is usually just comparing LHL PMship with, say a Habibie or Kim Jong Ill. [laugh]

Wah, you are right....I forgot to point the possibility out to our jolie. This may well happen in a system where he/she advocates a full one party dominance in parliament... [shakehead]
