LTA to explore easing tight COE supply

Taxi driver drives a taxi because it is his job. It is neither a need nor a want, but it can also be a need and no choice too.

It is his job only because he chose that route as a mode of sustenance. Where a choice is exercised, 'need' consequently is eliminated.

Absolutely. As i succintly explained, something acquired by way of privilege can never amount to a need.

The taxi driver drives not out of necessity but by choice.

so now there's need, want, and choice ???

to me, need or want, good or bad right or wrong are all relative perception. so lets not hold them to their absolute meaning.

i really hope garment can understand, you don't ask for growth if you cannot handle it.

define need.

i know a friend who's grandmum had to go hospital every other day for treatments.

on days when there was a car, (husband didnt need it that day), it would be better.

on days when there was no car, she refused to go hospital unless there was one.

so who is in a need of a car?

people like u and i,

or people like his family?

exactly my point, so why is the government not thinking of creative solutions to solve congestion, but using stupid ones that contradicts.

they might as well just create a law saying no cars allowed in singapore, cause that will solve congestion.

The bid to lower COE is simply to artificially lower the inflation rate. The latest rounds of published official inflation rate scared the crap out of everyone. So, lower transportation costs will temporarily give a false sense of lower inflation rate.

Remove taxi from Cat A. COE on Taxis should be capped at a certain figure. When a taxi company has a surplus of taxis not rented out, stop the company from buying more taxi till it meets the nominal figure. In this way, the savings on taxi companies can bring down the rents for drivers and meter price for consumers.

Adjust the Cat A from 1599cc to 1999cc or 2000cc cap.

Increase the Cat B engine cc from 2000 or 2001 onwards.

Increase the ERP price for private vehicles in CBD areas and allow taxi to enter CBD area without paying ERP price when entering empty.

Allow the consumers to have more space of choice on PUBLIC transportation.

Komoco is so confident COE will drop. See today's advertisement, Cat A price cut by 8K, Cat B by 10K. [thumbsup]

[thumbsup] One of the best way to relieve congestion is decentralisation of city centre. [thumbsup]

The other way is when crude oil runs out and everyone rides bicycle [grin]

this is GREAT ... how come million dollar paid brain could not think of it?

1. all new car sold without COE (wysiwyg). no need to worry about 4 bids failed return deposit bla bla bla sibei leceh ... AD see high coe no bid and hold you ransom for 4 bids (2 months)

2. pay what you bid ... [thumbsup]

3. pay cash for coe. anything pay cash and not loan hidden in the car price will sim tia and will not anyhow shoot $90K. if owner want to take a separate personal loan to cover this coe, it's their problem and bank will assess their credit limit separately.

unfortunately, these policies are buyer-biased but not in the interest of AD and GOVT wor

We need to ask ourselves what is the intend of this COE? Then I think the right decision and direction can be achieved.

AD.. they are already screwed with the COE scheme, but by removing them from the COE equation, this will force the AD to think of alternatives to attract the customers.

I though policies should always benefit the ppl?

These might not reduce the COE prices if supply is still constrained. Anyway what is the definition of reasonable in the 1st place?

some may even take up other forms of personal financing to cover the cash portion.

the COE policy as with many govt policies, allocate scarce resources to the well off. It just that now the bar has been raised dramatically out of reach to the middle incomers compared to 2-3 years ago.

As the prices climb further, it will be interesting to see if those elite that favor high COE prices in return for smoother traffic now, will switch camps and start complaining when they are the ones being marginalized in future and cannot afford their current ownership of 3-4 cars and have to BMW from their D9 properties.

Reasonable means what the common ppl are willing to pay. True that is COE is in short supply.. prices might still be high, but at least it is bided by the owners who will bid based on what he/she is willing to pay, and not AD who wants to make sale. So my suggestion policies are to target the willingness or true value of the COE and not a blown up figure by AD's and they just pass the cost to the consumers.

so whats wrong with congestion?

if you have to take 2 hours to get to orchard rd by car vs 1 hr by train, which do you think you will be more likely to take?

the solution isn't to simply limit cars on the roads, the real solution is to widen roads and build tunnels or remove speed cameras or increasing the speed limits, public road courtesy education and improve public transport

there are many solutions to a single problem and COE is the simplest of all solutions that is why our overpaid ministers have chosen it

Imagine businesses that need to export or send goods to customers. if the roads are all congested.. this will slow down the effectiveness of the movement of Goods. You see most of the thinking of the replies here are centered on movement of ppl, so if roads are congested.. more ppl will move to public transport. But if the roads are congested.. and they need 2-3 more hours just to move a container load of Goods for export to the harbour.. this is time wasted and $$ lost for businesses. Not to mentioned the increase in transport fees and such which will snowball to the consumers directly and impact competitiveness. Goods transport cannot move to MRT.

Widening roads.. build tunnels.. all these take time and $$. Who is paying? Note that our tax system in Singapore is one of the lowest.. where does the $$ the government spend come from? Also.. how wide can you widen a road before you hit the limit.. then what? How many tunnels can you dig before you hit each other? Infrastructure building does not happen in one day, we are not playing SimCity.

Singapore is a small island with limited land mass. COE is the quickest method (not easiest) to control the growth while the infrastructure catch up. Then again.. the question should be why did the infrastructure did not catch up?

If COE quota reminds, the price will either go up or maintain, just too many ppl wants to sit in the new C class. Last time quota is 100k, now quota is 25k, how will it ever come down?

Since harbour will be moved to Tuas, biz can move together.

The poor will prefer cheap COE for affordibilty.

The rich will prefer expensive COE for smooth traffic.

Definitely can see the split in class from an answer

[thumbsup] spot on!
