Cable ties failed to stop rail claws from dislodging

SINGAPORE - An SMRT line manager revealed that rail claws on SMRT's rail network continued to dislodge even after they were secured with cable ties.

Night duty officer Mr Loke Kwok Hoong was working after the train disruption on Dec 17.

He revealed to the Committee of Inquiry (COI) that cable ties were placed around all claws on the North-South and East-West lines during a thorough joint inspection by the Land Transport Authority and SMRT.

When asked why the claws could have dislodged, Mr Loke said the cable ties used were "normal", and not "special ones".

COI member engineering professor Lim Mong King asked Mr Loke if he knew of other times when claws have dislodged even with the cable ties in place, to whcih Mr Loke replied in the affirmative.

Mr Loke was also questioned about a cracked mirror of a multi-function vehicle used to inspect the third rail prior to 17 December.

Loke said he did not know about the cracked mirror till after the 17 December disruption, and added that if he were on duty on Dec 16, he would have been concerned and asked for inspections to be done.

But he clarified that not all night duty officers have the same knowledge about the inspection vehicle.

The hearing continues.

Now who are they trying to kid?

Its obvious that the cable ties idea is given and implemented by idiots at the first place. And is there something such as "special" cable ties?

SMRT is a bloody joke to think that such a "quick-fix" solution combined with reduced speeds are adequate enough as stop-gap measures. <_<

Joke for the year.

i think we do not need an expert to tell that plastic cable ties are unable to hold for long.

pay so much and get monkey's idea. haha..

The more trains breakdown the more I wanted to hantum Saw...and the greedy b@$t@Rd$

+1. Every day train delayed due to arriving and departing at platform ahead. [sweatdrop][shakehead][thumbsdown]

Anyway i think SMRT and LTA are slugging it out in court over the retrospect decision to opt for a inferior claw design.

LTA, SMRT used to be MRTC.

then public transport was "privatized" to be competitive. <_<

I thought MRTC = Mentally Retarded Training Centre did not sounds good, so corrected to SMRT = Stupid Mentality Replacement Transport (use cable ties and called experts)

So sorry, although I like the way you put the hard truth, I can not like it, as I am among the victims of regular daily train delays.

Cable ties are most often used as a temporary solution.

It is not meant for long term use.

For long term use such as SMRT tieing up the claw, really raise questions about their core competencies.

MRTC in beginning was hived off into two parts. one with all the construction liabilities and red ink due to initial cost outlays was subsumed by LTA. The operator portion was left and subsequently privatised.

No prizes for guessing why. Imagine they try to list SMRT with all the liabilities.

Neutral Newbie

It was the train manufacturer who got SMRT to adopt the cable tie as an interim measure

then how to recover the infrastructure cost if operations is 'privatized'

they dont have to! like i said, they threw all these liabilities as part of the bottomline of LTA then when the hiving happened.

Eeerrrrrrhhhhh.

Wasn't that obvious from the start?

COI should not tell the obvious. Wasting everybody's time.

actually i think they do that so they could get listed. Imagine you got billions of liabilities leh. So many lines, all those costs sure make the bottomline pua kang. Then the share price how? [laugh]
