Connection-disconnection Singtel

Damn Singnet. On 10MBPS, and perhaps on my 3rd contract, but realised the connection-disconnection is damn infuriating. Even from old home, and now here. what gives? Anyone else facing this?

I read somewhere here, that is to do with the tel lines? At end of contract, might change over..

But my place, the fibre oso not ready..haiz.....

Useful to call the telco to get it checked? I know they just as hopeless

Also on the 3rd contract. Same issue .

1st contract 10 mbps - free Lenovo R60 <Black Mio box>

Was perfectly fine on first contract.

2nd contract - Re-contract with lower price plan to 6 MB with free netbook

Problem starts to happen . Intermittent disconnecting , slower speed <which i expect since of the downgrade>

Symptoms - Disconnection would happen at random. Sometimes once a week. Sometimes twice a day. No specified timing . The internet LED on the MIO modem would just goes off and normally be rectified by powering off/on the modem.

- Had replaced all the ADSL filter plug at all the points. Doesn't help.

- Tried wireless or cabled - Doesn't help.

- Tried 3 different notebook with different OS. - Doesn't Help

Endure for 21 months or so. Re-contract the 3rd time. This time i upgrade back to 10 Mb again. Hoping things would get better.

Unfortunately no improvement.

Anyway, 3rd re-contract i was given a motorola non wireless modem. I tried swopping the modem. Stable for 3 - 4 days . Then disconnect again.

This time round i called Singtel Support. They sent engineer down. Initially checked no problem but the disconnection happen RIGHT infront of him when the support was at my place. He replaced a white MIO wireless modem for me. <FOC> . Was okay for 3 - 4 days. Problem came back.

Anyway , I just bear with it as i had alternatives to the web. The funny thing is that my 2MB Singtel Mobile Broadband is even MORE faster and stable than my 10 MB Home Broadband. [hur]

Did the Singtel engineer to check the telephone points inside the house and outside?

I had this problem previously before I switched to green camp and Singtel sent an engineer to check the telephone points and after several appointments, found out one of the telephone points had corrosion and was adding static noise to the line and frequent connection dropping issue was resolved after point was replaced.

I still experience line drops occasionally but its much better compared to previously.

I was also told reliability of ADSL and MIO in older buildings can be affected by deteriorated copper wiring

Now that my green camp contract is ending soon, I am thinking of switching back to red camp's fibre plan.

thnaks for the replies. Thus, you would advise me to stay w red camp? cos seriously thinking of going to green camp...

Frankly, red camp or green camp, the underlying infrastructure to overseas websites is the same. The problem with green camp is the aging cable modem standard, which fails to deliver the fat green pipe promise.

Red camp sometimes we get disconnections, seems to be due to the MIO box stability issue. I'm with red camp for the past 8 or 9 years since the days of 256kbps service, and I can conclude the MIO box is indeed less stable than the normal ADSL modem setup. Every now and then I have to reset the MIO box. If other bros say that even fibre gives the same intermittent disconnection, the most likely culprit is the router box.

login to your modem, change the wireless channel (e.g. if current is channel 9 then change it to channel 10 etc etc), this may resolve your wireless intermittent connection

yes. i had the same problem too. they sent someone to check all the phone points...did improved a bit, but now after re-contracted recently to 10M, the problem still occurred.

For my case, it's not just wireless issue . Even when connected directly to the router via cable also same fault. The "internet" LED on the modem just went off leaving only 3 led at the mio box instead of 4.

i was previously on SNBB 10mbps too..and was not on any contract..i'm holding on while waiting for Opennet to lay the cabling..well back to the topic..the disconnection occurs 5 or more times per day and its frustrating..i'm not sure whats the cause but gathering feedback from friends from respective residential locations also yield the same problem..oh yes this occurred somewhere last year in June onwards right after the contract ended..called them and singnet had sent different technicians on many occasions without solving the problem..i even bought a brand new modem for $20..in the end i had to wait for fiber to be ready and i terminated the SNBB 10mbps..now 2 months into fiber and i'm extremely satisfied with the non-disconnection issue..but imo do not place ur hopes too high on fiber as the international bandwidth is still very much limited..my 2 pence worth

here is what i will do.

1. connect a computer direct to your modem via ethernet cat5 cable ( i am guessing it is a 2wire hgv or a thomson speedtouch 536v6)

2. go to start>run> type "cmd" without the quotes.

3. once a dialog prompt fires up, type ping www.google.com.sg -t

4. this will instructs windows to do ping repeatedly. observe and see if there are timeouts and if there are any, whether there is a periodic pattern to it.

5. once you see server timeouts in this log, it is time to screen capture as evidence. press ctrl c (together) to stop the ping. highlight the offending block of text and without losing the highligh, go to the command toolbar and click copy. it should be under one of the file, view etc.

6. your connection is simplified as follows, com, cat5 cable, modem, phone jack, internal house telephony wiring which should all originate as tributaries from a single twisted pair going to your residence, distribution box, telephone riser, DSLAM, telephone exchange.

7. what you should do is to prove beyond doubt that the connection within your responsibility is sound. this refers to the point from the distribution box to your home. internally, you should also ensure that your wiring is good for conduction of data signal.

8. if you have the thomson modem 536v6, you could easily look up the console module of this modem to check on 3 modules which can be use to tell you and singtel that your line is ok or otherwise.

these 3 parameters are

a. attenuation (As low as possible). this refers to the degradation of the carrier signal in the data medium in this case, copper twisted pair. degradation could be attributed to oxidation of the copper cabling for instance.

b. SNR or Signal to Noise Margin (As high as possible). Noise refers to interference or background noise which is amplified when the DSLAMs amplify to boost the ADSL signal every 5km.

c. CRC error (As low as possible) this parameter is a cumulative count. when data packets are sent across the web, they are tagged so that all of the packets which may or may not travel in order can be accounted for and reassembled at the destination for consumption. Thus, CRC error is a data fidelity checksum procedure.

conclusion, when you speak to the CSO with such technical details, you will have the initiative with you. press for them to inspect the backend for your sake.

Facing the same issue past few months. Singtel technicians came down twice, still cannot resolve.

In the end, cannot tahan and request for laying of a new telephone point straight from the Singtel DP box.

All problems resolved. No more disconnections (not a single one) for my Singnet modem for past 1 month which running 24 hrs by 7 days.

If you are sharing your telephone lines in the house between home phone and broadband, just run new telephone point for all.
