Malaysian mechanics force S'pore couple to pay $925 for minor car repair

STOMPer fendi and her husband encountered several mechanics in a workshop in Malaysia who had initially promised them that repairing their broken down car would cost them $103, but later increased the fee to $925.

Said the STOMPer:

"I'm sharing our bad ordeal which happened on Sunday (Apr 8) at the North-South highway.

"Our car broke down at Senawang, Seremban.

"At that moment, a red car pulled over and a man in dark blue uniform with an Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) pass and logo told us that he has a workshop and will arrange for towing and promised us that it would cost RM250 (SGD$103), inclusive of towing.

"The boss told my hubby that it was probably the gearbox but luckily my hubby is familiar with cars and told him that it was the alternator that was spoilt.

"The boss told us that he would need to order the parts and asked us to stay at a hotel and collect it the next day.

"But we refused and my hubby kept monitoring the progress.

"He asked the boss what the cost would be but the boss said to settle it later.

"We reached the workshop at 3pm.

"The driver that picked us started drinking hard liquor.

"After waiting for the repairs (which took 4 hours) to be done, he showed us the bill and we got shocked -- the total amount was RM2,250 (SGD$925).

"We told the boss that it was ridiculous and asked why the cost was different from the amount that was earlier promised. We also told him that it was unlikely that a second-hand alternator would cost that much.

"At this point, the men started to get rowdy and raised their voices.

"We told him that we didn't have enough money, and he asked us to walk to the pump station to withdraw.

"My hubby was thinking of our safety, hence we had no choice but to pay them as it was getting dark and we needed to travel a 4-hour long journey back home.

"Even the staff at the pump station knew about that workshop and their dishonest methods..

"Back home, I did a search on Google and found out that many others had also fallen prey to this same workshop.

"The workshop had used the same method on all their customers, and some who had innocently left their cars at the workshop overnight had ended up paying RM9000 (SGD$3,698) even after a police report was made.

"Be cautious.

"Why can't the police do anything about this?"

Actually, if you compare J.B now to ten years back, the people there are rich. All the expensive cars there belong to them. We are driving the laopoks. I do wonder if all these money actually poured in from Sg. The rest of MY still poor though.

Call SG AA and they will then inform their counter part in MY. [drivingcar]

Don't ever trust those who arrived so called mechanic the moment your car breakdown. Heard many stories that those SG cars stopping along Highway for toilet break get their cars tampered with. Very common is deflated tyres.

Those AA uniform is easy available in MY and pass can be coloured copied. -_-

That is why i do not head to JB. The rest of Malaysia still ok.

JB is a town where low level mother f--kers lurks, businesses with no ethics and government with eyes focusing only on black money and bribery.

Seriously, i really hope more stupid Singaporeans travel to JB. Thus more thieves and other low level f--ks from other states to come and stay in JB and continue their cheating and low level activities, so that other Singaporeans, including myself and my family who wishes to enjoy the other parts of Malaysia in peace. :)

unforseen circumstances smtimes really bopian and safety is main concern... for myself when i take long trips up, i die die must know that proper help is just a phone call away... am a AA member and will call if touch wood anything happens to the car...

pre-trip car checks are very important... and condition of the car i always try to keep tip top...

once my bro-in-laws car over heated while up genting... an indian on a motorcycle appeared in an instance and looked at our radiator and opened the cap and water was squirting out and the only protection he had was a cloth.. i was smoking at the back of the car looking around and when i realised he opened the radiator cap i immediately asked him to put it back.. my bro-in-law gave him RM$5 and told him the car is ok lucky we had bottles of water in the boot and after about 10mins i topped up full of water and we made our way up.... 4 of us in the car 2guys 2gals... when i opened the engine oil cap it was smoking also... lol

after the trip i told my bro in law to use coolant instead of just tap water and use a fully syn engine oil... instead he immediately sold off the car and bought a MYVI SE.. lol...

Buy two car battery n drive car to nearest hotel. Alternator is just providing electrical current to the car system. Turn off a/c, HU n all other unnecessary electrical devices. With two new battery, constantly changing them when their capacity is used, should be able to make out of the highway.

Park car at safe location, like nearest hotel carpark.

Take cab/bus back to SG or nearest stockist to buy alternator.

Find nearest workshop to fix up the alternator. Some petrol station has those small workshop. Should be able to do a simple job as swapping alternator.

You find the same bad apples in Singapore, especially the dodgy ones that hang around the highway waiting for accidents to happen. Its a stressful situation, car breaking down in a remote location and they take advantage of this weakness.

If possible, remind yourself to call AAM (1800-88-0808) or AAS (+65 67489911) directly, keep the phone numbers in your contacts list handy and reject these tow truck on arrival. Can also call the PLUS emergency line also -- (1800-88-0000). They are all 24/7.

Thanks for the numbers ... [drivingcar]
