Mother of ALL JAMs in at Checkpoint

@Heartlander I went to MY (Malacca) on Fri 15th Dec at 11am - SG side customs no jam but MY side 3 hours jam. After that the whole N-S highway was clogged and couldn't even enter into highway. Decided to go via trunk road and enter N-S highway further up at Kulai, but even the small roads were jammed. Came back on Wed 20th Dec, N-S highway was smooth this time reaching customs at 5:30pm. MY side jam 1.5 hours, the usual 4 lanes merge into 2 lanes (not too bad cos I have encountered worse 10 lanes merge scenario). SG side jam about 1 hour even though the queue started from halfway at the bridge. SG side only 2 lanes open and every 10 mins or so they block a section of the lanes to allow hoards of MY bikes to crossover to to Johor, as it was end-of-workday time.

One thing that I don't agree with is that ICA just ask us to anticipate and endure the long waiting hours.  If I were to work in a department with a known consistent peak season demand, can I tell my customers that due to anticipated peak season demand, they will have to wait three times as long for their deliveries / applications / consultations ?  My customers will tell me that this is my problem, not theirs.

You already said, those are your customers.

ICA main purpose is to make things a s bad as possible for you to spend your $$$ in Singapore, not to go JB to prosper the others.

it’s all about money

customer = pay master = our income

if Tuas and Woodland chekcpoint are private entity … who clear faster would have more customers … that’s a different story

for now, there is no motivation to do faster, better and cheaper

From the sharing, what i can say is that you go at your own risks haha. At SG side, outbound normally no jam while inbound about an hour. If like that also cannot accept, then better stay at home.

What happen in Malaysia side is something beyond our control. Their traffic management has never been good as we all who been to Malaysia abit more frequently will know. During my recent trip, I encountered moderate jam when going up, travelling at less than 30km/hr for some segments while doing 130km/hr at some stretches. Also upon the return leg along the NSHW. But the weird thing is, I seldom saw any SG plate cars at all! 99% are all Malaysian cars! I remember telling my wife how come SG plate cars are so rare sighting when I expecting the roads to be full of them causing jams. Even the stretch from Yong Peng to Tuas second Link Highway when there were more stretches when traffic was about 30km/hr, I very very rarely will spot an SG car. And there were immediately no jam when I entered the Tuas Second Link Highway from NSHW to go towards Malaysia side custom which span about 25km. I exited at Bukit Inda side traveling at the highway speed limit of 110km/hr. Only in Aeon Mall carpark I could see more SG plate cars.

I only comment from my personal experience. And that is the jam situation is mostly due to Malaysia side for now. In the past I do not really know as never go there for a few years since Covid.

And I really agree with the horrible lane merging scenario just before Malaysia custom at Tuas side. It is really a jungle with multiple lanes merging into 4 lanes iirc with some jostling for position before that. I witnessed a Merc been too aggressive to join the nxt lane that it caused the side mirror of next car to flipped and luckily they move on after some gesturing. At SG side at least everyone kept to the 2 lanes structure from the bridge into the custom building so not much confusion.

From what I can see, there are 3 main areas for custom at SG side when inbound. The left is for motorcycles, middle one closed, and the right one for cars. By right the middle one could be opened to reduce custom clearance time but that would involve alot more resources. But that is something that could be done if necessary. But for now it would not help the situation much as the jam is more due to Malaysia side.

It's been years since I attempted to drive over the causeway. I only did it previously for my kid/family going to malacca, port dickson and legoland. Anywhere else, i rather take 1+hr flight to KL or Penang. Will avoid JB day/short trips.

I rather not deal with the anguish and frustration of queue cutters, not deal with the ugly monsters inside most of the Singkie/JB Drivers. The 3.5x exchange rate and time and mental health wasted from the jam is not worth my while.

I guess different stroke for different people. 😙

Last night I went onto KJE from Tuas at about 10pm.  The electronic signboard shows heavy traffic on BKE towards woodlands, starting from CCK.

I was like, wah slow moving traffic on BKE from CCK is not a joke. Although condition on the ground could well be different, I think highly possible since Monday is PH . [laugh][laugh][laugh]

IMO, 65% of SG plated cars going into Malaysia stay in JB area or Johor state, remaining 20% will go up to Malacca area, last 15% then will spot at KL to Genting area.

further north from KL to Ipoh to Penang side, hardly will see any SG plated cars due to distance needed to drive from SG.

Actually outside JB, I seldom see any SG cars, even in the Johor towns near to JB.

Saw a few in KL, in places like Ipoh or Kuantan, very very rare.

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority Singapore announced that starting from January 2, 2024, all MPV models entering & exiting Tuas Checkpoint 24hrs will be forced to use the bus lane to pass customs.

Passengers who use Tuas Checkpoint to enter the bus need to get off the bus by themselves and take their luggage with them. Go to the bus channel and queue up to scan their passports. Passengers who are returning via Tuas Checkpoint need to get off the bus by themselves but do not need to take their luggage with them.

MPV SUV models are probably: Toyota Innova, Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, Hyundai Starex, Hyundai Staria, etc.
