PM Lee worried about 2 disturbing trends in Singapore

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday identified two societal trends that worries him: A 'self-centred' Not-In-My-Backyard syndrome that has been increasingly seen among some vocal Singaporeans, and what appears to be a growing gap between Singaporeans and new immigrants.

In an interview at the end of the 20th Asean Summit in Phnom Penh, he raised his concerns about these two trends, and cited the example of angry reactions to Chinese student Sun Xu who has apologised for derogatory comments about Singaporeans. While he acknowledged that the student's remarks were uncalled for, he urged Singaporeans to maintain 'a certain balance and not get worked up every time someone misspeaks'.

Said Mr Lee: 'He shouldn't have made that blog post. He did. He has been chastised, he has been disciplined, he has expressed his contrition, he's sorry about it. We should have been able to move on from that and deal with it as one person who misspoke. We should not, because of one incident, make that into an issue, (to say) all immigrants are like that.'

Almost one year after the watershed general election of May 7, PM Lee said a 'certain stability' in Singaporeans' mood and expectations has been restored, following changes the government has made in both its policies and the way it engages. But, he added, it would take more time, as the country worked on achieving a balance between speaking out and working together.

quite sure he knew but chose to ignore the ground sentiments because they need the new citizens to dilute the population.

I am worried about two disturbing trends also, but different:

(1) Increasing lack of open space in singapore... more and more land is being used for residential development. Open fields for recreational purposes are now slowly being swallowed up one by one by condo developers!! Developed waterfront areas now sport no fishing and no boating signboards. Soon, the only approved outdoor recreational activities in singapore will be strolling, jogging, enjoying the view, taking photos... [hur] Or take up golf. Strangely despite land scarcity, there are more than enough golf courses [hur]

(2) Erosion of hard work ethic in the youth. Start to see the youth opt for easy choices all the time and despise hard work to achieve their aims. This also explains why less people getting married and birth rate is low. "Why take the difficult path??" seems to be the prevailing mentality.

We learnt all these from the famiLEE.

They were the ones who went all with their relentless defamation suits even when the other party had apologise. They even give any chance at all. So why should we?

Wealthy Foreigners....

Where do you think those who have previously been allowed to 'buy' the PRs need to play their games? Going to other location is time consuming, so if can find more courses locally then it's much less troublesome.

I also worried over 2 very listurbing trends.

1) the constant need to be slapped harder every 5 years or so.

2) the constant need to "make honest mistakes and move on."

more than 15 years ago , our PM don't f--k care even what the US said and just cane Michael Fay showed us as Singaporeans , we have to balls to stand for our cause , as a result , everyone respected us.

15 years later , our PM let foreigners walk all over us while we continue to pay them to walk over us. Talents? So what , you think how many of this people are going to stay ? Our PM simply forget one simple thing , you want people to respect you , first respect yourself. If people insult you in your own turf , have the balls to kick him back , if people aren't happy about it , kick even more. Scare what? No one will be respecting a pushover as a leader. Or not why do people serve army ?

IF i had a kid and some foreigner is gonna call my son a dog and runs to back to his daddy for help , this reminds me , someone is still around because of his daddy. If it is me, i am gonna call my son to break his teeth and i will break the daddy's teeth if he comes helping . If you let people bully you in your own place, you think people won't bully you when you are at their place? Seriously ,fcuking stupid.

What trend? Trend is i forsee this PM isn't going to stay around after 10 years.

Is he so sure that there are ONLY 2 DISTURBING TRENDS in Singapore which worries him?? Surely such myopic view is disappointing coming from a Chief Executive of the cabinet.

There are simply MORE THAN 2 MUCH MORE DISTURBING TRENDS which worry the citizens, and should have worried him and his cabinet, which; I'm certain many conscientious citizens can point out.

Such garbage can lead to unnecessary hypertension and therefore, it's best to be patient and wait for the opportunity to use the pen which is mightier than the sword. Sheesh!

Is our current pm a traitor?

Friend, regardless how much we detest such statement, it isn't wise to use such word. More so on a leader of our country.

Folks, this thread started out fine, discussing about the current affairs, but seems like there has been some views that are pretty overt and strung.

Just watch the posts here, as it borders on 'politics' and there have been a few posts here that can get you directly into trouble!

Remember, we are not alone!

Thank you
