another idea is to stagger working hours and run office like a factory..eg. 6am-3pm..2pm-11pm..people need to change their mindset abt working hours..shopping malls can operate 24/7 and weekdays and weekends are no different..whats the point of having shopping malls which not much shoppers patronize on weekdays 10am-6pm..government institutions open during "office working hours" and only retirees and housewives are available to go during those hours..it should be operated around the clock

not very good ideal.

imagine i need to work with another person in another company. my working time is 6am to 3 pm. his is 2pm to 11pm.

how to work?? business wise dont make sense at all.

I fully agree such govt offices should open when 9-5 workers are free to visit ie after 5.... :D

The ideas below are not new, wonder why LTA has been ignoring them all these years:-

- Cycling to work as much as possible

- Decentralise places with high tensity of workers

- Staggered / flexi working hours

- Working from home

- etc

Decentralising my not solve the problem, but instead bring congestion to that particular area.

It's much better off if majority of the drivers are working in places near their homes. Just like someone staying in the East and working in the West, travelling from ECP -> AYE.

If he's working in the east, he would not occupy the car space on that stretch of the expressway.

Working near his home, he gets off the road faster, relieving traffic congestions.

Staggered working hours will help spread the traffic patterns and may help relieve some congestions.

A 2-tier/deck highway on major expressways with little exit points or ones that are at the far end of it can also be considered.

Since land under current expressways are not utilised, this 2nd tier can be built underground. Exits may not necessary be aligned with current exits. These exits can be constructed further in so that cars exiting can be brought to alternate roads nearby. There is no good time to start building a 2-tier expressway. Building now will definitely cause some congestions, but it's better than building a decade later when the vehicle population is even higher.

I think it's a good idea to have multi tiers road ways, stacking them up save space [:)]

Depends on how we decentralize offices, if they are dispersed near residential areas, it will achieve "working near home" . [:)]

PM Lee worried about 2 disturbing trends in Singapore

PM Lee worried about 2 disturbing trends in Singapore

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday identified two societal trends that worries him: A 'self-centred' Not-In-My-Backyard syndrome that has been increasingly seen among some vocal Singaporeans, and what appears to be a growing gap between Singaporeans and new immigrants.

In an interview at the end of the 20th Asean Summit in Phnom Penh, he raised his concerns about these two trends, and cited the example of angry reactions to Chinese student Sun Xu who has apologised for derogatory comments about Singaporeans. While he acknowledged that the student's remarks were uncalled for, he urged Singaporeans to maintain 'a certain balance and not get worked up every time someone misspeaks'.

Said Mr Lee: 'He shouldn't have made that blog post. He did. He has been chastised, he has been disciplined, he has expressed his contrition, he's sorry about it. We should have been able to move on from that and deal with it as one person who misspoke. We should not, because of one incident, make that into an issue, (to say) all immigrants are like that.'

Almost one year after the watershed general election of May 7, PM Lee said a 'certain stability' in Singaporeans' mood and expectations has been restored, following changes the government has made in both its policies and the way it engages. But, he added, it would take more time, as the country worked on achieving a balance between speaking out and working together.

Multi-tier roadways if planned properly can seperate long haul and short haul drivers, improving travel times. The only problem in building it is cost.

They can create regional centers like those found at Tampines or Jurong East which are near interchange/MRT, it reduces the need to drive to work for those staying nearby.

My 2 cents:

I agree that there should/can be special arrangement for say people with difficulties, & people who need to transport for work (say sales), whoever, these should be done by special rate for applied to normal car ownership.

Goverment can set up pickup service to these people via special vans or something with handicap aids, aid workers & life support for instance. Have a standby fleet in case of emergency. I feel this is better than special rebate for family with elderly, or sickly, the latter prompt to abuse as well as burden to family.

Let the state take care of the elderly. They did their share for the nation when they are younger.

For jobs that required flequent travel, either use the company van, or have taxi arrangement. We can set up a system that Taxi companies can make special arrangement with flequent travelers, & their call for cab (through special line) bypass others, or have some sort of express/piority line. Those on this service must have special ID, registered by company & aknowledge by government authority.

Then there will be no reason for, " Some of the place I go is remote, I waited 20minutes at rush hour to get the line though...."

I do not buy the I meet Clients, I must drive Merc or BMW. If so, buy BMW or Merc at normal rates.

In the end, at the basic, everyone, poor or rich, inconviences or healty, must be able to get from A to B safely without big differences in time taken. Not everyone should expect similar level of comfort to get to their distination. Everyone should also have social responsibility, rich or poor, that you do not do so at inconviences of others, like ride a bicycle at middle of road. Or choke the road when you insist of driving to kopi shop just 500m away.

If you wanted to continue to live in this crowded (& will be even more crowded) Island nation, then, you have to expect the problems that comes with overcrowding, like cars must be limited, most people have to settle for apartment, flat, & you have to queue up for stuff a lot, wait 30mins to get a parking sort etc.

No matter how you spin it, it cannot go away. Change governemnt policy, change goverment, I will not do much. maybe when our population is still a reasonable size, like 3millions, & our government then said they we cannot have huge growth, & we will built our econeomy base not base on population growth, the growth in economy growth may be slow, but everyone has breathing space, & inflation can be keep in check.

But now, its too late.

Just to add:-

Alternative transport systems eg travellators (similar to human conveyor belt in airports) to move people in CBD between buildings, roller-coaster style people movers but with slower speed and minus the corkscrew/dips etc, shady cycling paths, riverboats, motorized trishaws, blading tracks, medium speed go karts with twin seats, etc can be considered also. :D
