you can try with your neighbour upstairs or downstairs! [grin]

I think the circuitry would be different. Within a house, you can have different circuit boxes but they may be connected to one main box so it may still be possible.

For me, just bring my media box, plug to hotel LAN point & HDMI to TV, turn on Hot Spot to enable wifi for all. can use the media box for entertainment too.

Actually the position of the antenna is just as important. If I were to setup wifi in a multi-story unit I will most likely use a highpower range extender, have the antenna and base mounted 90degrees or perpendicular to the wall (I will get to this later).

Things to take note for radio antenna be it wifi or anything else using radio signals:

- line of sight

- omni-direction

- channels

The antenna is typically omni-directional which means the wifi signal travels in such a way, see diagram. If you mount the antenna vertically the coverage will be horizontally. So if you mount it horizontally at 90 degrees like I mentioned earlier there will be coverage on your upstairs and downstairs unit. So find a middle ground.

Go sim lim or online to get an antenna with cable and base.

It will not look nice to mount this 90degrees on the wall but it will be effective. If you are intending not to get anything with antenna sticking out make sure you know how the signal travels to maximise the effect. What I suggest is just an idea of how wifi signal travels.

Lastly download apps to help you find out what channels are less congested in your area and do the settings on your router.

Hmm this sound logical. I rem in army time during signal training got use dipole to enhance coverage. This could be my solution as I'm not able to get lan cable to run through to 2nd storey, but I wouldn't mind a big ugly antnenna popping out of the wall. So I can just get a big antenna and attach to my existing router?

Hi any experts can advise how to boost wifi coverage?

I've heard repeaters are not so recommended as the internet speed will drop by half, while powerlines may not be very effective if the wiring at home is old.

I stay in EM, and the router is in a corner of the ground floor, due to the fibre broadband connection. on M1 200mbps fibre network. 1st floor no problems at all, typically can get 80+mbps on wifi. However, on the 2nd floor, sometimes the room don't receive signal or get only 1 bar, especially when the door are closed, or in the toilet.

Anyone living in multi storey residence can advise?

Maybe this may help you.

Last night i played around the location of my router, but due to the length of the cable, within a 3m radius. It was previously sitting on a table in a corner of my living room. So I tried to mount on the wall, and did speednet test on the 2nd floor to see the result. After 4 attempts of trial and error, finally found the sweet spot. In the living room itself, I'm getting 45+ Mbps, and in the 2nd level bedroom 20Mbps, worst spot is in the master bedroom bathroom can still get 10Mbps. All these test is on my mobile, as this is what my family will use most of the time, and my fibre broadband is M1 200Mbps.

Quite happy with the improvement, will say maybe 20% better now.
