KARTer 2nd Gear April 2, 2012 Share April 2, 2012 I think it is a brilliant business strategy by C&C marketing, to bring in the Cat A 1.6 C180K, on a rising COE wave. Great foresight in propping up their Cat A sales. It will be a while for PML to play catchup, with a new 1.6 318i model to arrive and to be priced competitively. The 116i and 118i won't actually do, as they are hatchbacks ... and Singaporean buyers generally (majority) prefer sedans. The small-engine merc for India/SGP markets are somewhat under-powered even though these markets dont really prefer the more powerful versions due to their higher prices. The cars are originally designed with more powerful power plants in mind, and by using an under-powered engine, technically speaking there's a mis-match somewhere....it's a bit like putting the best / high-quality sporting gear (car body, suspensions, etc) on a weak person (engine).... the package has something missing. ↡ Advertisement

But the C180K is C&C's best-selling model (by numbers) right now. Their proverbial golden goose! Many women buyers, I was told. They would not care so much about outright power ... 156bhp and 0-100 in <10s would satisfy many. Pricing, Cat A bracket, brand-prestige, German-manufacture, with nearly most things factory-fitted, plush ride and low NVH are it's main draw, I suppose. Kangadrool Supersonic April 2, 2012 Share April 2, 2012 skoda sold many taxis? i hope to see more private skodas on the road... new Skoda taxis? Sure? It's dying a fast unnatural death in sunny Singapore. It has mostly disappeared from the roads though they have some more years before the mandatory scrap age. Neither the taxi companies nor their drivers know how to maintain and operate them properly. Don't think they will bring in Skoda as taxi again, just like Opel Omega cabs. Proton_neutron 1st Gear April 3, 2012 Share April 3, 2012 this is the article on 316i...of cos it could still be a rumour.. http://www.autoevolution.com/news/f30-bmw-...ange-39172.html I think BMW will likely produce the 3-cylinder turbo engine for the base 3-Series. New engine for a new car. =D All thanks to meeting the average CO2 emission in Europe.

Yes, i agree:- its a good business/marketing strategy and the results show it. Housewives etc will go for it. Technically its a different case. Of course car makers exist to make money and such a technical mis-match or not is not their real concern.

I am pretty happy with the performance of the car .... 156 BHP and 0 to 100 km/h in slightly less than 10 secs good enough for me. Look around and most Jap/Korean with NA engines have similar or lower specs. I used to drive the 320i and many people said that it is underpower at 156 BHP but to me, it is decent enough. If you compared with the IL-6 323i or 325i, the 320i loses out but if compared to any Jap/Korean 2.0 NA, it is comparable or better. To each his own, IMO, the C180K is a "value" buy as it save 20k on the COE and performance is not great but good enough.

Absolutely, and that's why sale figures for cars like the C180 are good -- a commercial success. Sorry my use of "housewife"... dont mean to look down on them or anything, just trying to say "those who are usually not in a hurry, or apprecaite cars in a different but equally valid way" Edited April 3, 2012 by KARTer

Proton_neutron 1st Gear April 3, 2012 Share April 3, 2012 even so, the CO2 emission on a 2L twin-scrolled turbo 328i is good!!! Erm, how to put it. No denying the BMW 328i compared with the standards that Euro Emission sets for 2.0L NA/ TC cars and for the performance, is good, but there's a new rule now that car manufacturers have to meet a certain average as a committment. That's why Aston Martin bought over the Toyota iQ and called it the Cygnet. =( Ferrari has Fiat at the bottom end to average out the emission. Lamborghini has Audi A1's to average out. Etc etc.... Haha.

Much nicer I agree, but can be more aggressive I reckon =D Mercedes in general still more appealing for the "mature" buyer.... especially compared to BMW....
