Neutralsg 5th Gear March 19, 2012 Share March 19, 2012 Of late, I noticed many drivers tend to encroach into another lane especially when they drive at a bend. If you happen to drive along Lornie Road towards Adam Road, ECP along Benjamin Sheares Bridge etc., you will likely to notice that drivers on the 1st lane tend to 'jiak' the 2nd lane because of the centre divider. When a driver is not in the habit of sticking to his own lane, this habit will be brought along even on a straight road. As such, I have regularly seen drivers driving between lanes even on a straight road. Driving into another lane often happens when one is driving fast and is not able to control the vehicle to stick to its lane. Therefore, the next time you drive, check out how many times and over what distance you encroach into another lane because many may not even be conscious of such driving habit. Have a nice day and drive safe! ↡ Advertisement

Neutralsg 5th Gear March 19, 2012 Author Share March 19, 2012 some lanes are really too narrow Narrow lanes can also lah. However, I'm referring to the normal roads where the lanes are sufficiently wide to accomodate even heavy vehicles. This lack of lane discipline can happen on lane 1, 2 or 3. Hence, vehicle in lane 1 going into part of lane 2, lane 2 going into part of lane 1 or lane 3 etc.. Lane discipline does help to reduce incidents and accidents; if only more drivers put more in effort to practice lane discipline. Often, this happens when one drives too fast to be able to maintain lane discipline.

I think some may be caused by lack of driving competency. This lack of lane discipline may happen even to slow drivers too except that slow drivers drive in such manner due inexperience, lack of competency or have some form of phobia. However, for experienced drivers, it is often because of driving fast which resulted in having the problem of sticking to their lanes. Anyway, it's good to be conscious of the way we drive which is sometimes overlooked.

Fair comment. It is true that skill and guts do have a part to play. IMO, skill insofar is knowing how fast your vehicle can go without being affected by the centrifugal force to compel the driver to do a correction. Guts is when some drivers are afraid of driving too near the barrier especially the ones along Lornie Road and Benjamin Sheares Bridge. Nevertheless, it is better to practice safe driving and know the limits of your car and ability to control the vehicle. Raymondism Twincharged March 19, 2012 Share March 19, 2012 (edited) cannot keep in lane means skills not gd enough for that speed.. so pls keep left and slow down if cars cannot keep in lane.. buses how? take two lanes? Jman888 Moderator March 19, 2012 Share March 19, 2012 if they happen to 'jiak' lane mean there wasn't a car next to it. Try it next time to go closer and those car will auto keep to its own lane. It is human nature to extend the 'space' if given some. If i am sleeping alone on a queen/king size bed, i can take up the whole bed

I think it is best for such drivers to stick to lane 2 or lane 3 since they cannot stick to their own lane and is unable to overtake without encroaching into another's lane. If you notice, such drivers are unlikely to overtake if they think the lane is too narrow for them to past the vehicle they intend to overtake although they have the whole lane. Often, the speed they travel are much lower than allowed speed which resulted in a trail of vehicles following behind. ↡ Advertisement
