What I can do to reduce congestion

Every few days we have new threads on discussions on COEs, how to reduce Congestion by having some way to limit others from buying car or drive.

It involves along the lines of make it more expensive to own a car, restriction by min downpay, & even how many cars allow per family etc.

At the end of the day, many will not admit it, they wish less people will not buy car or drive in Singapore, so they themselves can get to drive without congression. Of course they will also 'justify' why they should drive more than others, be it they are rich, having young kids, elderly parents etc.

So how about no suggestion on why others should not drive or restrict car ownership to ease Congestion, but rather, how, ourselves can do to ease Congestion.

I fully expect this to be a rather quiet thread but lets see.

Let me start first:

Some of what I do, or will do:

1) I can walk when the distance is not too far.

2) I carpool when possible.

3) I can take public transport if where I am going is not convenient to drive (or chances of Congestion), like to the stadium on matchday.

4) I can have a no car day a week, where I will not drive to work or something.

Assuming, a big assumption, one day we have a good n affordable public transport system ,

I will use it as often as possible, plus cycle whenever its practical. :D

After taking transport for 3 weeks when my car went into workshop for repair due to accident previous year... I told myself I will not wanna take MRT to work everyday ever..nonce in a while to take a break from driving ok.. To take mrt due to no car.. Erm.. I rather take bus or walk.. Or simply drive no matter how much a basic car cost

This is what you call the intangible cost you are willing to pay for your luxury...u cannot put a price to it!

To avoid congestion?

Increase ALL speed limits to 90km/hr, all lorries and vans also same 90km/hr.

Right now the relative slow speed is causing speed differential on the road, that encourage some vans/lorries to overtake those slower vehicles.

If all can travel at the same speed, then there is lesser changing lanes to overtake, and therefore a smoother flow.

Traffic jams are 99% caused by cars that forced to change lanes due to selfishness and last minute cutting in.

The accordian effect will propagate backwards and cause the rear cars to come to a complete stop somewhere down the line. The accelerating and stopping is what causing the jams!

Twincharged

I take public transport to work at least 3 days a week and cycle to work at least once a week. Both are faster than driving for me. Only drive on weekends when bringing my wife and baby out because it is more convenient.

What about raising the highway speed limits to 110km/hr? Always thought our neighbours to the north got that decision right!

Kpe speed limit at 70km/hr, I drive above limit...

Just know where the bloody cameras r n u will not congest the road so much like others...

Keppel viaduct also like that but being called to the roadside...

They gave me 8 points for 101km/hr...

Accepted it and tried to be a law obeying driver...

Drive within limits, so many tailgate me....

At carpark while crossing speedbumps, 3 gals overtook me...

(one & two; mother & daughter (mom ex-tcs actress), other gal driving suv)...

Best solution,

mon - female day; all other drivers ban

Tue - speeder day; all other drivers ban

Wed - hogger day;

Thur - commerical vehicle day

Friday - students

Sat - drivers with provoked license day

Sun - law enforcer day...

U only can choose 1 day to drive, which day would it be?

Alot of people think some ideas implemented in other countries will work well in Singapore, but the hard truth is, it depends a lot on the type of drivers on the road.

For instance, single lanes road (both side share the same road) will not work in Singapore, as giving way is a difficult concept for many Singaporeans.

Say in Germany, well know for its no speed limit Autobahn. Some people will be surprise Germany also have very few accidents, & due to that, very low insurance rate.

But in order for it to work, the drivers must be responsible & keep safe distance & stick by the rules.

Few simple rules that is very hard for Singapore, the Germans did well. Keep safety distance, learn to give way, overtaken only on the inner lane, & get off to outer lane once done. Oh that & they signal (most anyway).

My French colleague (who lived in Germany occasionally due to work) told me, its only in Germany, you go Italy or France, people also zip zap in traffic, so their accident & insurance rate also higher.

But the British are even better & more friendly, but I heard the Japanese also very nice on the road, but I have never been in Japan to verify.

By increasing the speed limit to 110, I am not sure it will work, but Singapore is so small, there isn't much difference driving at 90 or 110 in my opinion.

I always drive speed limit + 10km/h. No speeding b4.

U kena tailgate most likely drive on outer lane @ speed limit.
