COMMENT

Member of Parliament for Tampines group representation constituency Baey Yam Keng recently had to apologise for his comments with regards to Chinese scholar Sun Xu's remarks that "there are more dogs than humans in Singapore."

Sun studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

His remarks set off a storm of protests among Singaporeans, especially online. Baey added to the controversy when he said in a New Paper report that Singaporeans also "need to reflect" on their own behaviour.

The paper reported: "Mr Baey weighed in on the issue during an interview with The New Paper published last Wednesday. He said people should not jump to the conclusion that all foreign students are like Mr Sun and that Singaporeans also 'need to reflect' and ask whether 'we (have behaved) the way they described'."

It was like throwing a matchstick into a tinderbox, and Singaporeans turned their anger to Baey. The MP later issued an apology, in Parliament, for his remarks. "I do not think that we can just treat all the negative sentiments towards foreigners as noise," he said.

Ng Bin Hong, in a letter to the Today newspaper on 5 March, expressed disappointment at Baey's apology.

"Mr Baey, in urging us to examine if our society is walking in a healthy direction, was one of the few voices acknowledging the social problem we face today," Ng said. "His comments did not undermine Singaporeans but, rather, cautioned against discrimination and bigoted behaviour. It is unfortunate that he ultimately apologised because of irrational, populist sentiments."

One would suspect that few Singaporeans would agree with Ng, especially given the prevailing sentiments on the issue of foreigners in our midst.

Acknowledge sentiments towards foreigners

What the government should realise, however, is that such sentiments towards foreigners are real. More importantly, these should be addressed more thoroughly and effectively. And to be fair, the government has tried to do so

within MCF there are views and counter-views etc etc... dont forget MCF also has not a few learned keyboards to guide a discussion on this "openly" and "honestly"....

once and for all, why not lay down here all the concerns, suggestions, happiness/unhappiness, etc and put everything on the table. then start looking for solutions / half-solutions / ideas etc etc

something is better than nothing, better than going round and round....

or just let it simmer, and hopefully go away one day? [:)]

everything can be discussed, can be theororised, compromised, etc etc...

why not?

its a real problem, top-down "preaching" by gahmen doesnt seem to work so far...

the more real problem is anger against the indiscriminate opening of doors of immigration and scholarship to foreigners. and that the policy maker and administrator gotta take one hard look at themselves

Is it just me, or does the govt treat Expatriates as a different category than Foreign Talent?

There is precious little mention of how white Expatriates have begun to throw their weight around in recent years, using physical violence against Singaporeans and usually getting off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. I want to know, does the Govt condone these actions by the expatriates?

In reality its human racist inclinations showing itself albeit at a different angle. By nature humans don't like other humans exhibiting different culture, speaking in different accent, show different values or operating at different mannerism than themselves.

Humans are comforted with homogeneity and they revolt at disparity. Most will deny being racist as it is against the law so they curse under their breath at citizens different particularity but they openly despise foreigners because they are not protected in law.

Humans don't need a reason to despise disparity, its is ingrained and inherited from our chimpanzee ancestry. Chimpanzee tribes will freely wage war against other tribes, just like any other human war, for resources as an excuse but mostly to establish a cultural dominance over another, establish homogeneity of their choosing.

I believe as long as the people accept lip service, assumed challenge as apology, that is it.

I believe it is almost total surrender rather than total defence. [sweatdrop]

Exception: uniquely Singapore, Elites attack Singaporeans the norm [sweatdrop]

My answer to this issue is simple..

Would All these flare ups and anger against FTs arise and come to this level...if Baey's Boss did not direct his order to allow SO MANY FTs, of all shapes and sizes to come in and many stayed on?

Further to aggravate the issue, what his Boss said up-front was only the very best and talented FTs can come but all sort of Ah Cheng, Ah Zhao and Ah Li was allowed in, without actually accounting to the public on the real intention and the real suituation that was happening until..

The public sensed it that there was too many FTs which was way too late ..

What was shown was Baey's boss totally dis-regarded the views of those that gave him power to rule, totally dis-respected them and instead played the actual ppl who voted his Boss in... out.

I say..

Fire the Baey's Boss and Baey would naturally lose his job as a natural consequence.

Solving both problems ...one an actual one and the other as a consequence of the first one....at one go.. :D

why your post don't have the word "sinkie" ?

My use of the word Sinkie are the ppl of Sinkland....largely coming from the peasant brood...

Apparently Baey's Boss is an Elite and also a Sinkie..although a parasite like Baey cannot termed himself as a Elite ( he so wish.... you know) but the word Elite should take perference over the word Sinkie here...and he is also a Elite who screws Sinkie like you..

So the word to be used here should be 'Elite' unlike you ...

a Sinkie peasant.. :D

So enough of the word ..'Sinkie' in this post... to make you happy...now? [laugh]

You are not a good reader...and you can't read my post even though it was so 'well written'... clearly...

You can't even distinguish who is the servant and who is the Master...

No wonder...the Master deservingly...

screws you! :D
