Sullivan: I regret ever hiring GrantMay 17, 2011

Email Print

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has expressed his regret over the appointment of Avram Grant last summer, labelling it a "bad selection" by the board.

Grant, was hired by the Hammers last May despite having just led Portsmouth to relegation from the Premier League, and he repeated the feat this term - with West Ham rarely leaving the bottom three all season and eventually going down on Sunday after a 3-2 defeat at Wigan.

The Israeli was sacked by co-owners Sullivan and David Gold within an hour of the final whistle and leaves Upton Park with an unimpressive record, which has seen him spend 67 of the past 71 weeks in the relegation zone with Pompey and then the Hammers.

Sullivan and Gold sounded out Martin O'Neill about replacing Grant in January but after being snubbed they ended up giving the former Chelsea boss an unconvincing vote of confidence.

"The entire board is 100% behind Avram," Sullivan told ESPNsoccernet in January. "He is a really decent person who deserves our support."

While Sullivan still believes Grant is a favourable character, the Hammers co-owner says that, in retrospect, hiring him was the wrong decision.

"Avram is a lovely person but the results sadly speak for themselves that it was a bad selection by the board,'' Sullivan told The Sun. "We all share some blame for the results - the board, the manager and the team.

"However, the team can only play the tactics and formation they are asked to play. We want a manager who will get the best out of the squad and foster a strong team spirit.''

Sullivan also moved to ease fears that relegation from the top flight would have dire financial implications for the club.

"Debts will fall as we [the owners] will put in more money,'' he said. The financial burden to us and our families will rise, not the debts of the club.''

RA is wierd... all these players already old and at most left with couple more seasons...

and their form this season has not been that great either...

i would have instead let these players go and allow AVB to rebuild the squad...(though i doubt he can succeed)

Players power at work.

This team require a no-nonsense manager who has the backing of RA.

Someone in the mould of SAF with the "hair dryer" treatment or Jose Mourinho.

oh ya... when is the show starting?

curious about if we really can find talents using this manner...

but as Fandi has proven with the HTWO team...

u dun have to be playing for the singapore team to be good players...

it probably means our scouts are not doing a good enough job to look for talents...

i am not refering to chelsea isolated case but as a general. I dont mind paying Rafa as its money from the two moroon. but paying money to get rid of underperforming roy hodgson??

even if the special one is around its still like that.. he dont groom young player. this is why inter is sufferring now. not young player to replace the squad. similar issue going to happen to real marid.. and when he leave real marid, rea l marid going to suffer and ppl thought its because he leave. but real issue is he dont groom young player.

that is why my friend who support man u, is worry if he become the manager of Man U.

FYI, I read somewhere that Real madrid squad avg age is <25.

err.. Mourinho did give former-wonderkids Mario Balotelli and Davide Santon their big break at Inter, but Inter after that chose to sell them to Man City and Newcastle respectively

at Real Madrid, Mourinho also purchased highly-rated French youngster Raphael Varane, and also gave Sergio Canales his debut... but Canales failed to live up to potential and was loaned to Valencia

i feel Mourinho could not afford to buy and give too many youngsters chances to play because Inter and Real Madrid are clubs that demand instant successes
