病从口入 祸从口出

These blokes obviously have not learnt their lesson and continue to make this sort of blunders that put them in bad light and have to claim later that they are being misquoted or misunderstood [rolleyes]

Unless they are TCSSing with their buddies in private, whatever that comes out from their mouths, folks will note and may get offended if it is distasteful.

Stuff like apparently insinuating low pay turns away talents to serve, seemingly making silly comparison of carrot cakes and the latest asking us to reflect upon ourselves if some stupid PRC scholar's insults are true are all touching on raw nerves of many.

This really makes one wonder if all these self-sacrificing public figures have gone through any course by their party on public-speaking skills. Even without this skill, anyone would know what to or not to say based on common sense.

By the way this chap is the MD of a public relations company headquartered in NY, USA.

"This added to the furore, even after Mr Baey subsequently explained on his Facebook - saying he did not agree with Sun's comment, but that he felt Singaporeans could be more open to criticism."

Aiya, give him the benefit of the doubt la. I suppose now they realize what's the REAL sentiment on the ground that caused them to almost fall below 60%. I guess that also means some of them have LOST TOUCH with the ground.

Good for the people I guess ^_^

Actually I like his approach. I like my MP to be able to keep his cool when face with adversity, gather and understand all facts, before giving his response. A good leader, imho, is not someone who jump at every opportunity to tear his shirt to show his is going to fight for his people. This kind of reaction will not bring the country to anywhere. We are all mature people, please.

Agree with what you said but don't you think, one have to feel the ground sentiment first.

Should understand how ppl felt when S$36 million (as in budget report) was spend in bringing foreign scholars only to comparing us as dogs. Do you know how much money one family has to spend for a child to go to a local Uni.

There are smart kids in Singapore but their families could not affort the school fee cos their housing loan had tied them down for 20 plus years. Some have to take part time Uni course so as they could work to support their courses in private Uni.

They can sponsor whoever they want but once that person don't appreciate it, just kick him out. No need to defence him and asked us to reflect ourselves.

That student is not talking in his school campus where only a handful of peoples know. He does it on a blog where knowning that thousand of peoples would read it.

say sorry but do not feel sorry?

Paying lip service.

"apologise" for those who want him to dovit, but not his intention.

Anyway, apologising seems to be a common miw publicity stunt now.

And when you say there are more animals than humans in MIW camp, do you think they will reflect on it and be more open to criticism ?

Most likely, they will sue the pants off you.

to be fair, the TNP did take his words out of context

but then, a more aggressive stance always work in politics...

Tay Ping Hui's bashing at Sun Xu has gained him a large number of supporters now

sometimes too gentlemanly can't work in politics... and Mr Baey is trying to be one

Quote from CNA report: Baey Yam Keng apologises for comments over foreign student's remark

SINGAPORE: Tampines MP Baey Yam Keng apologised in Parliament Tuesday, for his comments over a remark by a foreign student here on a Singapore government scholarship.

Mr Baey has been accused of not standing up for Singaporeans.

But he said that was never his intention.

The comment by China national Sun Xu, that "there are more dogs than humans in Singapore", had sparked plenty of comments after it went viral online.

The final-year Mechanical Engineering student at the National University of Singapore had posted the remark on his microblog, after describing how some "uncles" in Singapore would stare at him after he brushed against them in public.

Some netizens also took issue with the fact that Sun is a government scholar.

Mr Baey was later quoted by a newspaper saying that there might be something in Sun's words that Singaporeans could reflect on.

This added to the furore, even after Mr Baey subsequently explained on his Facebook - saying he did not agree with Sun's comment, but that he felt Singaporeans could be more open to criticism.

And he maintained this stand in Parliament on Tuesday, although he apologised to those who felt hurt by his words.

"In trying to give the benefit of doubt to what the student said, and attempting to soothe the hard feelings of some Singaporeans, I was accused of siding with a foreigner and not standing up for fellow Singaporeans. It was never my intention to undermine Singaporeans but to those whom my words have hurt, I am sorry," said Mr Baey.

But he also noted the frustration among Singaporeans on being squeezed out by foreigners, whether it's for seats in the train, or for places in schools.

He said that negative sentiments against foreigners should not all be treated as noise.

What he has learnt, he said, is that he needs to be more sensitive to how people might read into certain words.

And he said the same applies for policymakers when they craft, implement and communicate policies.

- CNA/cc

He apologised, never his intention but he maintained his stand...... [sly]

What he means ...

No mention the foreigner did not apologised to those he walked into.

No mention the foreigner stared at the uncles he walked into.

I believe B... meant like that foreigner, he also despise Singaporeans like himself. [hur]. He stand for the foreigner, not for Singapore.

It's fine to reflect over other's criticisms and one's mistakes, but not reflect over insults.

The "more dogs than humans" comment is an insult; it is not a criticism nor a mistake.

Hence, the appropriate response to insults is either ignore the remark OR in this case put the offender in his place.

How come such a simple logic but Baey MP cannot understand but still insist in parliament that the scholar's comment is a "criticism"?

Tampines electorate.. please WAKE UP your MP.

Baey Kan MP can jolly well keep his apology, and do us all a favor in learning to differentiate between a criticism and an insult.

-_-

People like Sun are like the single cancer cell residing in a body. In this case, this cancerous cell was detected on the new organ transplanted from another patient. The cell may or may not activate for the whole life and the organ may even get rejected. But once the cell activates, together with other such cells, you have to chop off more of the body with time and still not sure how far the cancer penetrated other parts of the body.

Dunno what we are waiting for...this cancerous cell showed itself on the scan and hospital still "pondering".

This is not the only cell, there are and will be more and perhaps they will in time take over the body, the social fabric, culture, harmony and our way of life.

What are they waiting for?
