The metal wheels overheat lah... stop the train for the wheels to cool down, then continue...

Announced a 10 min delay due to train fault in jurong east this morning. Sat in stopped train for about that period. Not too bad but can count on it less and less if you want to be somewhere on time.

Launched of upgraded signalling system on NSL delayed for more rigorous testing: LTA

SINGAPORE: An upgraded signalling system on the North-South Line (NSL), which will shorten the intervals between trains, will only be operational in 2017 instead of this year as initially projected, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Wednesday (Oct 26).

The launch has been delayed despite the upgrading works being completed because of the need to conduct more extensive reliability tests, LTA said. These tests include safety and system checks, such as ensuring that train doors and platform screen doors are aligned when a train stops.

As the new Tuas West Extension will use the new signalling system, its opening has also been pushed back from end-2016 to the second quarter of 2017 for more reliability tests and fine-tuning, LTA said.

The 7.5-km, four-station extension links the Jurong and Tuas industrial areas to the East-West Line (EWL) and is expected to carry 100,000 commuters. Civil, electrical and mechanical works on the four stations - Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link - have been completed.

"There may be some software bugs in the system that we need to run,” said LTA Re-signalling Project Director Tan Yih Long.

For example, if a train is unable to stop accurately, the team will need to test the stopping accuracy of trains at every station platform, Mr Tan said.

“International metro operators have also advised us on their re-signalling experience, (and said) that they need to do more extensive tests before operationalising the system,” he added.

TRAINS TO RUN AT SHORTER INTERVALS

Trains currently run at intervals of 120 seconds under the current signalling system, which has been in place since 1987. LTA began upgrading the signalling system in 2012, and with the new technology, the authority estimates that trains will be able to run at intervals of 100 seconds, resulting in shorter waiting times and less congestion.

More than 1,300 tests need to be carried out for the NSL re-signalling project, LTA said, adding that SMRT has been conducting trial runs of trains fitted with the new signalling system after passenger service hours since August 2016.

The move to an entirely new signalling system is “a complex project and problems could impact commuters across the entire line”, it added.

SMRT first announced the S$195 million deal to upgrade its signalling system on the NSEWL in February 2012, after two massive train breakdowns in December 2011 that caused the company to be fined S$2 million and then-CEO Saw Phaik Hwa to resign.

At the Committee of Inquiry into the disruptions, Ms Saw highlighted the design of the signalling system as one of the factors behind track faults, along with higher train frequencies and rainy weather.

NSL, EWL TO GET NEW TRAINS

LTA also announced on Wednesday that it will add 57 new trains to the NSL and EWL fleet, on top of the 42 trains added to the North-East Line and Circle Line fleets in 2016. The trains will be added progressively from now until 2019, bringing the total fleet size from 141 to 198.

It will also call a tender to replace the 66 Kawasaki Heavy Industries trains that have been operating for the last 29 years, LTA said.

LTA also said that more than 80 per cent of re-signalling works on the EWL have been completed and the system will be operational in 2018.

Looks like a serious signal fault today ....

Hopefully they can rectify this fault soon ....

Reliability getting worse .... How to have car-lite when the basic public transport keep on breaking down?!

Solve the basic fundamental before going for the next step...

Indeed they cannot solve the basic fundamental of the public transport, and yet they still keep pushing car lite?! Lol.

Sorry, bro. Apologise.

Kar Kia (underlings) got the wrong message.

It should be rightly what you said, Car-lite but don't why Kar Kia got the message as Train-lite.
