Bukit Panjang LRT temporarily suspended as engineers carry out urgent inspections

SINGAPORE - Services on the Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) are being temporarily suspended as authorities carry out "urgent inspections" on Wednesday (Sept 28), following a track fault that crippled 15 trains the night before.

Bus services along the route are now running free of charge.

SMRT said that trains' current collector devices were damaged on Tuesday evening after moving over a damaged rail joint.

It added that engineering staff had worked through the night to assess and rectify the fault.

Although trains started running at 6.40am on Wednesday, a power trip occurred less than four hours later, with preliminary findings suggesting that the damage to the train cars might have affected other parts of the track.

From 9.20am onwards, intermittent crowds built up on station platforms at Bukit Panjang and Segar stations, as commuters waited on platforms for as long as 20 minutes between trains and commuters who had boarded were asked to alight from stalled trains.

When trains did arrive, problems cropped up - including stalled trains, smoke, and stuck doors that staff had to open manually.

At Segar station, Miss Ho Xin Peng, 18, was on her way to a job interview when she met with the delay. Frustrated by the long wait, she and her mother left to take a taxi around 9.40am.

"We have been waiting since 9.15am," said Miss Ho. "This has happened before. We didn't know about the delays. It's frustrating."

A 26-year-old security officer heading home from work, who gave his name only as Farizal, said at Bukit Panjang station: "I've been waiting for about 20 minutes. Normally the wait is about two minutes."

Retiree Peter Wee, 70, had taken the Downtown Line from Botanic Gardens to Bukit Panjang for an appointment at Senja station.

The Balestier resident said he had waited more than 20 minutes for the LRT.

"This is my first time taking the LRT in Bukit Panjang and this happens," Mr Wee said.

Shuttle buses at Segar station appeared to have stopped running for a while after 10am, angering commuters such as Mr Tan Kok Seng, 66, who was travelling with his wife, a wheelchair user.

He said that, with BPLRT delays every few months, residents in the area had their travel options limited.

"There are no shuttle buses and they won't give me a refund," Mr Tan told The Straits Times around 10.40am.

"I have to detour. It's such an inconvenience especially with my wife in a wheelchair."

From 11am onwards, service came to a halt between Choa Chu Kang station, on the North-South Line, and Bukit Panjang station, five stops away.

The track problem caused delays on Tuesday night from about 10pm till the end of service. The damaged trains are now at the BPLRT depot at Ten Mile Junction.

"Investigations into the incident are continuing even as engineering staff work to repair the 15 trains. We apologise for the inconvenience caused," SMRT said in its Facebook post.

The incident also led to train service starting more than an hour later than scheduled on Wednesday, with SMRT first tweeting at 5.33am that commuters could expect a 30-minute delay due to a "power fault".

It was only at 6.40am that SMRT announced that train service had commenced. Even then, it warned commuters to expect "degraded service" and longer travelling times.

Due to the disruption, SMRT said it had activated free bus and bus bridging services to serve commuters along the BPLRT route. It added that additional SMRT staff were also deployed along affected stops to assist commuters.

Sorrie lo, dont think they will slap their own face in parliament. Since when you hear them debate the public transport issues in parliament?

Anyway, i think they should tear down the whole LRT system, revert back to feeder buses from cck to bt panjang even faster and better. Lol.

Now is year end exam period, and soon followed by "O" & "A" Level exam, MOT & LTA step in to better improve the system reliablity ASAP! Or do we have an contigency plan to deal with massive train system breakdown, LRT inclusive?

Don't get me wrong, I don't meant to add fuel to fire, but getting late for an exam can be diaster for many. I have the habit of leaving home much earlier on those days my kids have their exam, but ever encountered 1 case (due to road accident) that my daughter was almost late, and the feeling is bad (for me and my girl) till date.

Even leaving house early also cant help much if you encountered train breakdown! Any train breakdown or delays will have an adverse impact on travelling time.

But before you say impossible, there are indeed exams to be taken over internet at home one. These are from overseas certification bodies. But, got fixed timing one, need to open up your webcam access and computer to the examiner to examine. So, it's almost impossible cheat one.

No.

Cos such exams might be very difficult ones. I have done one such exam before. It was open book and you can discuss with friends also. Cos you do not need to log in at the same time but just within a 24 hr period.

Even with someone googling someone looking at notes and someone looking at textbook helping the one doing the test, the person tested only got 20/30.

And of cos then as we rotated, we thought the second person and subsequent person would have an advantage. Boy. Were we wrong.

So be careful what you wish for.

This, I am referring to is closed "book" type. You need to cede control of your computer to the examiner, turn on webcam, timing fixed.....

Yup, agree that open book exams can be very much difficult.

I always fail those open book exams

as I never know which page to open the book

to get the answers. I prefer those close book

one where you secretly take out a piece of paper

with all the right answers.

Good luck to the people in Bandung. Lol.

SMRT very the smart one. Bring the Bt Panjang LRT to ST Eng to refurbish and paste ST Eng sticker everywhere and then flog off to the Indons for a profit since probably already depreciated.

Then buy new trains for the citizens of Bt Panjang.

win-win  [scholar]
