Even if he say it's Ferrari, the result is the same.

Maintenance is the key ...

not superficial ones, but thorough ones...

And must spend $, don't just cut here and there ... else, how to improve ...

Just for goodness sake, don't give out the dividends for 1 year, use the $ to upgrade the whole network and trains, and you be able to reap more profits later when system is stable ...

Read ST

28 April, Pg A21.

Rail breakdown, where does the buck stop?

Finally. .. someone come out to say the CEO needs to answer for it and that share holders and it's board need to decide.

But then. . It ask if it's fair to "a retired general and former chief of defence force? "

Hmmm... is it sarcasm ? Or was the writer just covering his backside. The classical "beat dog must see master".

But then it says signalling upgrades were not done in the 90s when " former navy chief kwek siew jin was heading SMRT".

Hm.. finally, stop putting the ex generals all over the place. . No one owe them a living ok!!!

Then it goes to suggest LTA , ministry of transport also bear responsibility.

2004 to 2010 population explosion nothing was done and 2011 to 2014 faults doubled. Govt Cannot conveniently push everything away.

Remember this. .

Who took PM post during the 2004 to 2010 period?

By 2011, not just transport. Housing, medical care, immigration, security ... EVERY MAJOR SECTOR SCREWED UP!!!

Essentially, singapore took a nose dive from 2004 to 2010. From 2011 till now, still trying to recover from the previous decade of screw up. Easily 15 to 20 years of lost progress and opportunity cost.

But Then on pg28.

Back to praising. . See read it yourself.

Really. . Sometimes reading ST, you have to wonder ... treat it as opera, it can be entertaining.

Treat it as serious news. . Vomiting.

JUST IN: SMRT reports S$109m profit for FY2016, 20% rise from year ago.

SINGAPORE: SMRT's net profit for FY2016 came in at S$109.3 million, up 20.1 per cent from the full-year net profit of S$91 million year ago.

Looks like another fat bonus going into the management's pocket, while the railway and trains continue to break down ...

Why cant they use these $ to repair the tracks??

Actually if u just want fact and fact alone it is still okay. But if u read their input... Forget it. They have no stand in the paper at all. Sometime pro... Sometime anti... Worse... Sometime in same article pro and anti. Not stand. No bone.

SMRT - keeping shareholders happy. Fug the peasants aka commuters/customers.

that's capitalism in a nutshell. Applies to REITs too.

I don't understand why you all blaming the SMRT CEO leh.  He already made the following statement last year.    I'd say he's right on target.

http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/smrt-chief-desmond-kuek-apologises-for-train-disruption-promises-better-train

"We can shorten our mean time between failures, we can step up our maintenance regime and intensify the amount of maintenance checks that we do on a regular basis but it will still not be able to 100 per cent catch every one of this potential faults that can take place especially when the system is at the age that it is," he explained.

No No No you need to lengthen it man.

Lengthen it not shorten it.

I hope he didn't tell his staff that

and they are working overtime

to achieve his objective.

Ya lor, of after so many incident, what did desmond kewk do? His main concern still seems to be profit. Yes, he should talk about profit, but the fundamental problem with the rail still not solved and he still so yaya. Cannot take it lao lor, he should go for the good of the company. Bet he will be getting fat bonus again be it got frequently breakdown or no breakdown or not as end of the day is his paycheck that he is the most concern with. End of the day those taking train suffer. How? 4 yrs is enough to endure and give him chance already.

Good argument. Agreed.

SMRT is in a funny situation. It is supposed to be private company that is answerable to her shareholders. So if CEO, one of his top priority is profit us understandable.

Here's the complicated bit. The ministry of transport, Mr KBH seems to be interfering with his job including making press statements that should had been made by the CEO instead. The CEO is in a difficult position, kind of like being a sandwich, squeezed on both sides. To make matters worse, he can't bite the hand who feeds him or at least gave him the position.

Hence, it is counterproductive, every leader got their own style and thinking in managing their problems. Therefore, it would be good if ministry of transport goes into the background and support the CEO instead of stealing the limelight or the Ministry of transport take over the management of the SMRT.

In any organization it is difficult two work or move forward with 2 bosses who wants to direct the show.

of course there are other issues but we need to get the management sorted out first, then the company will have a clearer direction.
