err hk mtr model is that they own the land ard stations so that property rental etc will cover the train op costs. there is no need to tear any system, the solution lies in our garmen hands but they refuse to do so. Garmen can plan for this to happen but i feel nobody has the balls to bring this forward.

I thought SMRT also owns some land (typically the land where they have the shops inside the station).

Third North-South Line breakdown in less than a week disrupts train service from Woodlands to Kranji on Tuesday morning

SINGAPORE - South-bound train service on the North-South Line (NSL) was crippled for close to half an hour early Tuesday (April 26) morning - the third time in less than a week that Singapore's oldest MRT line has suffered a disruption.

NSL operator SMRT said in a tweet at 6.31am that there was no service from Woodlands to Kranji stations, and advised commuters to seek alternative transport.

It said in a subsequent tweet that the breakdown was due to a traction power fault, while free public and shuttle buses were activated at affected stations.

Normal service resumed about 18 minutes later at around 6.49am, according to SMRT.

In its latest update at 7.20am, SMRT said some trains and stations were still crowded due to congestion.

In a statement on Facebook, SMRT apologised to commuters and said it was investigating the cause to determine if it was related to the disruption on Monday (April 25) evening.

Tuesday morning's disruption comes less than 12 hours after a power dip caused an unprecedented breakdown of train services along three MRT lines and one LRT line, as the journeys of thousands of commuters were affected towards the end of the evening peak hour.

Along the NSL, stations from Jurong East to Kranji were hit.

Last Thursday, a stalled engineering train at Raffles Place station knocked out a stretch of the line from Marine South Pier to Newton for almost an hour.

Ya, I was in Guangzhou for 5 days recently. Everyday, I took their Metro several times. I don't encounter any delay, deruption, etc. In my opinion is not d weight of d trains. Is just tat our train system is operated by commercial companies to make profit. So, very minimal is spend on preventive maintenance or replacing essential parts. In short, cut corners. Best option is d running of d trains should go back to govt.

you all misunderstood the kindness, these lights are to guide passengers in and out of the station during blackout, imagine without these light as a guide, people will be running and crashing into the barrier and hurt themselves.

So it means whenever there is power trip/fault, no alterative plan can be done but only can wait and wait for the power to restore ar?!

Yup.

But if you had proper electrical load calculations + purchased reliable electrical components + regular maintenance of them, they should work most of the time. Would not fail easily.

If breaker trip and u still continue to let power supply thru, u got a big potential of fire risk. Switchboard/component fire will be even more disruptive, can make the MRT down for very long time. I remember of one LRT station switchboard on fire and they need to replace it. I think a few days, that station cannot operate.

Safety is always number one over any operations.

quite spot on, many bro bring this up b4.

when the priorty of profit is higher then the priorty of service and quality.

when answering to share holder at the end of the year is more important to answering to the user.

more or less this is wat we get. I dun really blame the ceo,

china mrt is build to to serve the public only.

while our , yes to serve the public, but at the same time more importantly must make money ,

I don't think it's a public versus private issue.

Let's take GE which is definitely shareholder driven.  If they were to scrimp on quality just to raise their EBITA, their customers would demand the head of their CEO as well as CFO and COO.  Secondly, they don't reward such behavior, they reward keeping their customers happy and expanding their base.

When Quek or whoever takes over the hot seat changes the culture of doing things at SMRT, then we will see a difference.  If you reward clowns, then you will get the results you deserve.

Last time, my moulding machines on full running capacity and will definitely trip the circuits breaker, our PE recommended to change all 3 phase wire that the contractor had cut costs to cheat.

Since than, every days operations back to normal.

yap, its public transport for god sake.... not a company to make huge profit and make the shareholder happy.... if they need to increase fare, shut the farking system down to sort out the mess, just do it... pain 1 time better then keep on having pain over and over...

But.. but. ... where will all the scholars and ex generals go? ? Will their standard of living suffer? ?

We have been Phiak-ed good and proper.

To be fair. . Whatever legacy she left over, it's been long enough for the current CEO and his kakis to fix. At least not get worst.

And the current CEO is not cheap.

Definitely time for Hara kiri.. and get a real industry expert to take over. Dipping ex generals all over the place is a failure.

There is no motivation to woo the customers because the customer do not determine their revenue or even the train fare. The benefits of market forces through privatization is absent here, because there are no alternatives - they even went on to remove bus routes along the MRT routes (this was already long debated). The train fares are decided by this committee that made up of the operators themselves + representatives from LTA.

It looks funny to have LTA officials joining our private company committee meeting to discuss operational issues.

Private enterprise does not involve civil service provider acknowledgement besides their rules and regulations.
