So can I complain too? Be a good boss and implement flexi-work hours. They come in late = they go home late. If they want to leave early even thou they come in late, they can come back on Sat to put in the required hours.
13177 Hypersonic April 5, 2016 Share April 5, 2016 I took our reliable and trusted Public Transport System and boarded the MRT at 7.40am to work on 04042016... the train was relatively less crowded and I thought wah impressive SMRT finally woke up from their slumber... Oh man how wrong can I be... By the time we are at Khatib, the train started to give problem... and PA system announcing the train is delayed due to train fault... move off slowly from Khatib... I was thinking to myself at least the train is still moving... oh man how naive can I get... By the time we reached Admirality, the train stopped completely and everyone was asked to alight... But to my surprised everyone was calm, so I guessed they had already accepted their fate... the next train was packed... Ended up reaching office at 9.20am... closed to 2hours... So yah I can see everyone is happy with the Public Transport, no one complaint when asked to leave the train and wait for the next one... You are very lucky, at least the train never breakdown along the track of nowhere and was asked to alight?! Or worst the train breakdown somewhere and you are stuck inside the train for 20mins or more before finally was asked to alight! Lol.
Nzy Twincharged April 5, 2016 Share April 5, 2016 If I ask 100 drivers about the train/bus service, I can probably get 80 to say it is good. If I ask 100 BMW commuters about the traffic jams situation, I can probably get 80 to say it is good. Power of statistics. IMO, Its more like, you ask all those who surf internet and follow all these updates about public transport delays, they will say public transport is bad. But if you survey those who take public transport regularly, most will say it is reliable. Frankly, I take the train everyday multiple times due to the nature of my job and I have only been delayed by more than 15min twice since I started taking the train regularly 6 years ago. In between have encountered those small delays but those don't affect the experience much cuz only a few minutes anyway. I guess if we base on our own experience, not many of us have experienced many of these major breakdowns. We only know about it cuz we read about it online when people post about the breakdowns. Not really, a lot of drivers here, and a lot of complain kings here too. Sometime I really wonder why so many in this forum complain about public transport. It's like, it's none of our business. So that we feel better about paying 40-60k for the right to rent a car for the next 10 years.

I guess also depends on each individual's tolerant level and expectation on the public transport. Cause for person A, a delay of 10 mins might means very long, whereas person B might find train breakdown of 30 mins is ok. And some people don't find the train sardine packed is an issue, but some people might think it cannot be acceptable.

Philipkee Twincharged April 5, 2016 Share April 5, 2016 To be fair, statistics can be skewed. If I asked, i find the MRT reliable __________ Most of us will put all of the time or most of the time because it is not correct to say MRT is reliable rarely or never. So up there they take it as praise but in actual fact, if they had asked The MRT should be given an overall grade of __________ The answer might be different. Can MRT have more breakdowns and be more reliable? Possible. If my train had one breakdown per 100 km, it is 1:100. If my train have 5 breakdowns per 1000 km, it is 1:200. In terms of frequency of breakdown or reliability it has done better. In absolute number of breakdowns and people conveniences, it has worsened. Or if I asked is the MRT convenient? Most of us will say yes. We will want to add that there are lots to improve but since the question is yes or no, we just put yes, and viola, another satisfied passenger. My two cents.

Second part might be the reason why they say we have more breakdowns but trains are more reliable. Cuz we have so many more stations now due to the Downtown line. So even if there are more breakdowns, but it might affect a smaller percentage of commuters than in the past. ↡ Advertisement
