Alg 5th Gear February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 Drove past Geely showroom this morning at Ubi.... gone. The high COE really drove many agents to fold. ↡ Advertisement
Proton_neutron 1st Gear February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 Wrong. Cos they don't have competitive products to sell. The next I worry is Chevrolet. Haha. Hyundai and Kia are doing pretty well though.

Paddie 3rd Gear February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 Geely cars were terrible. They did not deserve to be sold here even with a $1 COE. At least Chery cars are far more decent.
Kurty Supercharged February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 Drove past Geely showroom this morning at Ubi.... gone. The high COE really drove many agents to fold. does it matter? not that they are offering competative pricing or good make models..
Proton_neutron 1st Gear February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 The Chinese have a longer way to go now that the Koreans are taking on the Europeans now. We're living in 2012. Not 1970, which the cars they're producing are of those standards.

Kb27 Supersonic February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 (edited) Buying a Chinese built car today is like buying a Japanese built car half a century ago. It will still work, but with today's high COE, it doesn't make sense for many people. Edited February 13, 2012 by Kb27
Refresher76 Clutched February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 Don't play play. Geely do have good cars. They call it 'Volvo'.
Kb27 Supersonic February 13, 2012 Share February 13, 2012 You mean half a century, not half a decade right ? Half a decade might apply more to Korean cars. The general standards is still lower for cars exported to Singapore, with the goal to reduce ARF costs. Wonder what is preventing BMW or VW from being exported from Malaysia or China. Both have assembly plants. Maybe the perceived prestige will be lost and therefore Singaporeans will not buy them ? But major markets in the world assemble their own cars. This is the current norm. There were ADs that closed down during the 1990s too, during the COE hike. Some brands disappeared for 1-2 years then returned with a new AD. "Century", honest mistake. Take a look at some China car, you would think it's built in the 70s.

Foton is still around, just passed the showroom at Toa Payoh recently. Besides that, some others like Dongfeng and Hafei are still on the SGCarMart new car section, but no idea if they are still active.
