Emissions-based car taxes in the works

The Government will soon announce a new emissions-based vehicle tax system.

It is expected to replace the decade-old green vehicle rebate scheme, which expires at the end of the year.

But more than just handing out tax rebates to buyers of environmentally friendlier cars, the new scheme will take a carrot-and-stick approach.

Buyers of fuel-efficient new cars stand to enjoy rebates of up to $15,000, which they can use to offset their vehicles' Additional Registration Fee (ARF), the main car tax here. Those who go for more pollutive models may have to pay up to $15,000 in extra taxes.

Sighz, i dont mind driving a green vehicle.

But there are so many goods vehicles being used for private transport as well as taxis using diesel to pollute the roads.

Govt not doing anything about that first ? They just want the tax $$$.

diesel is the way to go for cleaner emissions

but end of the day it will still be a money-sucking venture for the govt nonetheless

i feel our govt is doing too little for green initiatives..why not go after all the commercial vehicles which are polluting the air <_<

Sinagporeans as a whole is not doing much for green intiatives, which is quite surprisingly since we have the least resources, & one of the worst hit by global warming.

But its not hard to understand why, as we are in our little world of climate relative consistancy. Always Hot & humid. When people have a chance to live in more dynamic climates & changing landscape, then maybe they can take more notice of the changing climate of our planet, & have more initative to be green.

ANyway, we must be careful what we wish for. If the commerial vehicles got extra tax base on emissions, then more stuff prices will go up, as they will say operating cost now is higher, & almost everything need to be transport one way or another.

hopefully with this means a relook at diesel tax structure since current diesel technology gives really low emission with very good mileage... i think it is a good initiative

Diesel low emissions ? Joking right ?

If its so good what for people still go refine petrol.

You don't see the black soot does not mean its not being released.

Very very very obvious is the a money making scheme...

Unless they abolish this plan, and get raise the petrol taxes, use more pay more.

Use more = more pollution.

Buy a V12 6.0L engine car, but park at home, still cleaner than Taxi uncle leaving their soot producing machines while having their dinner or supper.

just look at what happened to CNG cars. at first say subsidy if buy CNG cars, then slowly keep increasing CNG gas price and then to the CNG saga recently.

To be honest, I feel their efforts of so called 'environment friendliness' is purely superficial.
