The version I heard was the rat rested in the bull's nose or head when reaching the end point leaped forward to claim the champion during the race of the 12 animals. Jade Emperor arrange a race across river, 1st 12 animals reach finish line entitled to be in horoscope. Rat hitch a ride on Ox [fast on water], pretend to sing songs near the ear of Ox, later jump off and run toward finish line. So Rat 1st in horoscope. Cat asked Rat to wake him up when river race about to start. Rat forgot to do so. So Cat is alway enemy with Rat. Of course, there are many versions around... The rabbit wants to hide from the tiger to avoid being eaten up, so the rabbit secretly follow behind the tiger and finished 4th.
